How much it's likely to cost to extend this kitchen?

r03vyt.jpg
This is my kitchen. I want to extend it (where the bin is) about 1 meter. How much the kitchen worktop and cupboard likely to cost for the one meter extension?
I don't want to contact a company for a quote just yet as just want to have an idea of the budget. Alternatively I can buy a kitchen island instead.

Also if anyone knows how much it costs to cut a granite worktop that would be great. I found a kitchen island on Gumtree but the worktop is a wrong shape so I'm wondering if it worth cutting the granite.

Many thanks in advance!

  • My first thought would be "are matching units and worktop still available?"

The answer to that will dictate your next move,

A freestanding kitchen island or trolley will be cheaper, an instant solution, and still give you flexibility.

    Thanks,
I think the units are standard but not sure about the worktop. We may end up having to change all worktop (but I need to save money first).
So yes buying a kitchen island is an easy solution. Only thing is my kitchen is not big enough to use it as an island so it will need to sit next to the existing unit. I'm worried it may look strange.
  • I can't make it out in your photograph......what is on this side of the place where you want to extend the units/worktop? Is it a dining area?

I don't think a freestanding unit would look strange, but would get something which has a sufficiently different top so that it doesn't look like a bad match.

You will have a peninsula rather than an island, and it will be easy to move out of the way if you need to open up the floor space occasionally for any reason.

What do you want to use the space for?

Would something like a full cabinet size butchers block top work.

The cost of the cabinet will depend what you put in it.
A simple 1000 base unit with shelf will be quite cheap but start putting fancy drawers or pull outs will add £100s.

or something like a free standing unit

A change in height is a good way to avoid the bad match look.

If you know where the current stuff came from you could start with a 1000 base unit and panels to match and see what that comes out at.
  • Thanks for your comments.
This is a large open plan kitchen / dining / living room so on the right hand side is the dinning table and then a living room. We need something presentable because everyone can look at the kitchen when they enter the living room. The reason for extending is that we want more worktop space and also somewhere to put the bins (we have to stop baby from playing with bins all the time :()
I've found this trolley on ebay for £100 (second hand but pretty good condition), I think we should go for it, do you agree?

  • Or this one for £200, please vote which one is more suitable?
(I do like this one but I think the granite worktop is a wrong shape for our kitchen, the curve worktop may look strange)

  • The ebay unit looks best.
