patio height
Hi all, am going to be re-laying a patio soon as we've just had an extension built and the old one has been dug up. We have bi-folds and I know its possible to have a flush threshold between inside and out, but I also know that this causes issues with the damp proof course where the outside level should be 150mm below How…

Spindle sleeve?
My front uvpc door is jammed locked. It's one of the push the handle up to lock it. I've taken the handles off and inside the hole where the spindle slots through, there appears to be something broken so the spindle just spins. Is the sleeve? Do I knock it out and replace or is there a knack to tackling this. Thanks, Simon

Bath tap shower diverter failed
The ten year old Ideal Standard (Waterways Brassware according to the leaflet we were left) bath tap self cancelling shower diverter in our main bathroom has failed. We rarely use it as we also have a shower cubicle but, a few days ago, a guest told me that it wouldn't work. The water would not divert to the shower hose…

Old circuit, low insulation resistance readings - REPLACE?
Just had an electrical safety inspection done of the house. Been told that in various places circuits have low insulation resistance ratings (this is going to be rated as a 2 - serious concern, doesn't need addressing immediately). Also informed that the circuits are generally old, although there is a mixture of copper,…

Jammed Pull cord switch(Bathroom) - Old circular type
I recently moved into a new house. The pull cord switch in my shower was broken and I find it very hard to find a replacement as it is very old. It has a circular shape and I think it is flush type. The base was attached to the ceiling which measure 65mm. The switch it self seems to be embedded into the ceiling/bordering…

Washing machine & dryer upstairs?
I was considering locating a washing machine and dryer upstairs. Then I wondered whether the vibrations caused by the machines would upset the ceilings of the rooms below? Does anyone have experience of washing machines and dryers on the first floor of a house?

Worcester Bosch 42cdi
Does anyone have experience of Worcester Bosch 42cdi? I'm interested in whether its able to deliver a shower plus reasonable flow of water to kitchen taps? I've had some people tell me that with all combis the shower will take almost everything. And yet I've read comments like this too: "Even with a flow rate of 18 on the…

Nice UPVC door/porch
We have just bought an Edwardian house and it has a horrible 80's looking porch. I am tempted to remove the whole thing as we have lovely original stained glass and slid wood door inside. However, I also realise that porches have their uses so I wanted to see if anything nicer exists in the world of porches. I can't seem…

Combination boiler in a 4 bed semi
I am agonizing over which boiler to get for my 4 bed semi and 4 strong family. A Combi I am told will suffice, but you can't run 2 showers, and with 1 shower running, another tap is not going to deliver a great deal. A Megaflo on the other hand will deliver a lot more, but you don't get the benefit on instant hot water.…

Hi Members, I have moved to a house in Ruislip. Need advice in upgrading the alarm system. At present it is a bell only 15 year old alarm. I am after a wireless monitored alarm. Any recommendations for companies in Ruislip, Harrow area. Got a quote from ADT for around £450 with £28.99 a month. However a bit disappointed…

Paintable wallpaper - patchy?
We recently put up some super fresco paintable wallpaper and painted it with Dulux magnolia. All was well until it dried and it looks awful. Really patchy. It has had 3 coats now but still mega patchy. Is there anything anyone can suggest to help? I do not know why it looks patchy. We used a roller on the walls. Is this…

Coffee maker
I was given a lovely shiny Nescaf! Dolce Gusto coffee maker for my birthday. The coffee is not as strong as I like but I've read dozens of reviews and most praise the strength. Does anyone own this make machine and could tell me how they get a strong brew please ? Thanks as always EM xx

Re-rendering - will we get our money back?
My husband and I bought a fixer-upper about a year and a half ago - and finally moved in at the beginning of this year. We've always seen our stay here as relatively fleeting, as it's only two bedrooms (and no room for a dog!). However, my husband is now working from home, and our family is growing, and we're really…

Multi-detectors for stud/metal/AC
Is there one that actually works? Being a cheapskate I'd like to buy a cheap one, of course. But all the reviews say they are a waste of time and that you "get what you pay for" etc. But then it seems the expensive ones don't work very well either. I watched an online review of a Bosch one costing about £60 and that, too,…

Shower quote - am I being unrealistic?
I got a local company to quote for a new shower, basin, light and taps in my bathroom (replacing the current ones which are old and a bit rubbish). The quote came back at £670 which I thought was ok. I then asked for them to add a new shower tray (to replace the current one) 760cm square and a screen instead of the curtain…

Buying a run down house...
We've just bought a run down house which needs renovating top to toe. It wouldn't be occupiable without a new kitchen (incl all appliances) and bathroom plus it has single glazed windows. Are there any relevant threads that point to undertaking these tasks on a miniscule budget? Due to unforeseen issues we have a budget of…

What polyurethane sealant for concrete driveway cracks?
I've seen, on some American sites, that its common there to seal cracks and expansion joints in concrete driveways, with sealant that you extrude with a sealant gun, but I can't find anything here that is labelled for this job. Does anyone know which of the hundreds of sealants available here is suitable? Cheers.
