Electrical survey
We recently had some problems with our power supply tripping out for no apparent reason. We called in an electrician who has temporarily sorted out the problem but has told us we need a new consumer unit as ours is very outdated and doesn't conform to current requirements. He has suggested that before we have a new unit…

Chasing wall for cabling
Hi all, It is normal for a electrician to cable chase using a cross hatch pattern for the cable run. Excuse the poor diagram, but he appears to have chased as follows: # # # # # #### (ie solid vertical chase with horizontal cross hatch along approx 1 1/2 inch either side) rather than what I was expecting: " " " " #### (ie…

Why is my boiler dripping water?
I've got an Alpha CB24 combi boiler and over the past couple of days it's been dripping water. Not constantly but since last night the tin I have placed underneath it has collected about 25ml of water. The heating is coming on at the correct times and there's plenty of hot water. Thanks

Cleaning gas oven burner
I've recently moved into a house with a fairly old gas stove/oven, model Leisure Laureat. I've found that the gas burner in the oven is not burning gas properly and therefore the oven does not get as hot as it should. The gas burns with a blue and yellow flame instead of all blue, implying not enough air for proper…

Washing Maching Insurance?
Hi all  I'm paying £7.99 for a washing maching repair contract - I took it out in lieu of paying a one-off fee when I had an electrical fault with the machine (big bangs coming from the kitchen and tripping electrics, and not even switched on!) but since then (18 months ago) it has been working fine (touch wood) and…

Reducing water pressure on a Vaillant 837 boiler?
Hi, I've got a new boiler and I've overfilled it (it wasn't coming on and I thought it was a lack of pressure - I was wrong, it was something else) so when the central heating is turned on the meter is going into the red. How do I slacken off the pressure? Cheers.

Washing machine problems
Wondered if anyone could advise me? During the last week, my washing machine has started leaving what looks like purple dye marks on some items that have been washed. This has happened 3 times this week, and each wash has been a pale wash or a white wash, so it's not like the colour has run. I use powder in the drawer, and…

Curved wood Molding/trim

Flame failure device, retro-fitting
My house has a couple of coal-effect gas fires. They were installed years ago by the previous owner and we VERY rarely use them because they look good but generate very little heat. They were fitted before flame failure devices were the norm. A house move is on the cards in the next couple of years so I'm starting putting…

Old putty in windows
We have got rain leaking in from where the putty and paint have cracked on the bottom edges of the outside of our wooden windows which is causing the wood to rot. Do we have to remove all the old putty in order to re-seal the glass or is there a quicker way of weather proofing the windows? We don't own the property so…
