Electrical survey

We recently had some problems with our power supply tripping out for no apparent reason. We called in an electrician who has temporarily sorted out the problem but has told us we need a new consumer unit as ours is very outdated and doesn't conform to current requirements. He has suggested that before we have a new unit fitted we have a full survey of our electrics as our property is quite old (circa 1930) and that there will almost certainly be some problemsthat will need to be sorted out before a certicate can be issued for the new consumer unit. Has anyone experience of this and what will the survey entail?
The electrician was a recommendation from a builder we use and trust so am not doubting what he has said, just want to know what to expect when the survey is carried out. Does it mean that evry light fitting, plug socket etc will need to be tested?

yes that's correct - the electrician will test every circuit and will need access to all sockets and lights. She/he may need to remove some sockets/lights for further investigation
Not sure how big your home is, but really this is a days work for an average sized property including all the paperwork
You should receive a report (Electrical Installation Condition Report - EICR) which sets out the findings.0 -
There's more than 1 way to carry out work like this
If I change a consumer unit then I connect stuff that exists, but not to current standards, detailing these on the cert
If something is dangerous then it's not connected and left safe
You will probably need to upgrade the bonding (earthing to gas and water pipes) at the time of changing the consumer unit if it isn't already OK
The electrician should be able to advise accordingly
You should use a competent person for the work, links below
