Toilet flushing but mainly on one side
I have a dual flush, fairly new cloakroom loo bought from wickes about 6 months ago. I have a problem that when I flush it the main force of the water seems to be on one side, therefore not completely clearing everything first time. The loo paper just seems to spin round and round. Any tips please?:o

Replacing insulation due to re-wiring and plumbing - can I apply for a grant?
Hi all... We've recently bought a place which needs practically gutting and re-wiring and we are also installing central heating which requires quite a lot of time working in the loft for the pipes etc. It currently has a load of insulation which I think has been done using a grant scheme (cant be sure but it was an old…

Cool showers
Hi everyone. Can anyone help? We have 2 Trevi showers. Both appear to have developed problems at the same time. They are just not getting hot enough. We are racking our brains to understand why both should have developed a similar problem. Can anyone think of anything obvious?

Flooring (Load Strength)
As topic title. I'm busy converting a spare bedroom into a computer room. Is there any kind of flooring I can purchase that can support a load strength of max 400kg per square metre? I've been thinking of solid flooring as opposed to laminate as I'm guessing I would need a minimum of 12mm solid oak or something similar to…

Thick lining paper - skimming - advice
Hi - after a bit of advice. Just bought a house and the mrs wants all the walls skimmed and painted. the walls all seem fine (no bumps holes etc.) and (as a man) was thinking of a cheaper alternative. Would using thick lining paper look good - this would then be painted after. If I did use lining paper instead of skimming…

Toilet leaks whilst being sat upon
That's 'sat upon' (not a spelling error). Have noticed a bit of damp on the carpet behind the loo, further investigation has shown that we get quite a substantial drip whilst the loo is being sat upon! 2 questions 1) Any ideas what it could be (I am assuming a seal needs replacing)? 2) Also the likely cost of…

Unwanted Promotional Mailings
I've been trying to cut down on the amount of mail I get through the door and for the most part I have been very successful. However, I am still receiving mailings a couple of times a year from an Airline and a football club (who I went to watch as a one off). This is despite speaking to both companies, requesting that…

Can't quite put my finger on how to describe it but want more ideas to get the feel of early exploration - see photo of the map that is already on the wall. The room is a study/spare room - desk, chair, computer, futon + chest of drawers and not much else at the moment. Some bits I am looking at: Telescope:…

Replacing thermostat help
Hi, I have this thermostat in the hallway that apparently doesn't work - the gas man told me and he said that he'd disconnected it and to only use the radiator to adjust the temperature. I tried this for a while, but I find it really difficult to achieve a right temperature, so would it be possible to replace the…

What do I need to do re dishwasher
Hope I am not too long winded. I am not very good at understanding diy, and I have had a lot of really useful help from this board and the kind people on it, so I wonder if I can ask again. I really would like advice about where to start looking at what to do. I would like a dishwasher, the sink is at an awkward height and…

"Chimney cleaning" products
Several offerings of strange chemicals promise to turn chimney creosotes dry so they will flake off easily - either on their own or when you sweep the chimney. Has anyone used these? To what effect? Is there a preferred product? I also wonder about calculating a best buy - supposing they are effective and their chemical…

Buy now, or wait for January sales?
Anyone know if B&Q are about to discount their prices in a January sale? I was in B&Q today. They have big signs up about promising to beat any quote, but there are a ton of terms and conditions attached to that I'm sure. We're looking to buy a bathroom suite and all the bits and pieces to redo the bathroom completely. Got…
