Insulation
Hi there Does anyone know if you fit external or internal wall insulation to cavity walls? Our walls are already filled but this was done before we bought the place and seems a bit rubbish as the house is freezing. Already got double layer loft insulation so wondering what else we can do! Thanks! Caroline

Finding a welder
Hiya, I've got a bracket that's come of that needs tack welding back on. It's a little thing about 2cm x 8cm. I don't know much about welding, but I would have thought it's only a few minutes work. The problem is finding a welder in my area. Googling just seems to suggest companies that build bridges and industrial…

Anyone Live In A House Thats Not Quite Finished
Im unhappy with my kitchen, two lots of wall sockets wonky and not replastered in. (this was left due to electrician not coming back). Ive tried doing it myself but made a mess. The big thing in my kitchen is the plumbing for water pipes to waste and tap and central heating. They are loose and the wall underneath is not…

bosch washing machine noisy
hello we have a bosch washing machine approx 5 years old. today a noise we had never heard before started. It became more noticeable during spin but on messing round with it can hear a grinding/rubbing sound from the top left hand side of the drum when I spin the drum by hand. My first thought is that a bearing has gone,…

help needed-smiths audio switch
I moved into a house which has a double gang Smiths Audio Switch fitted in the hall. 1 switch controls the hall light (no problems with that). The other switch controls the outside light - or rather doesn't. It has a red dot on it and there is a sliding piece on the switch which reveals a large dial with a black line round…

To buy new or second hand?
I need to purchase another fridge freezer and washing machine. I'm not sure whether to buy both items second hand or to try and buy new. I've had a look on ebay and I can pick up a reconditioned Bosch washing machine quite reasonably. Are there any problems with transporting washing machines? Am I correct in thinking that…

Washing machine with only cold fill
I have a hot and cold water supply, but the new washing machine I intend to buy only has a cold water valve - what do I do? I want to buy Dixon installation at £20 but am a bit concerned in case the delivery men refused to connect. I was thinking of getting a plumber to connect but not sure how much it will cost as the…

Making More Space In Box Room In a 3 Bed Semi?
Hi Folks I'd like to, if possible, re-arrange my daughter's bedroom but it's proving quite difficult due to her having the slant of the stairs in the hall, in her room. At the moment we have an inbuilt bed which goes from the slant towards her window. Bed is a bunk style with some storage under it. However, she wants to…

My oven has failed, the agent is closed
Hi, my oven has just stopped working, when it went it took out the main trip for the whole flat, so I don't think its something I can attempt to fix myself. My letting agent is on holiday until 2nd Jan. At least thats what the answer phone message says. This is a link to their website with what to do when the office is…

Paint not adhering to walls
Hi I've read postings about problems not adhering to new plaster. I have painted over previously painted lining paper (wiped over and dried) in Dulux Once. It covered well and looks great but now find it rubs off! Will a second coat help? Not sure what to do next.

Best glue for china?
My absolute favourite china mug has lost it's handle and I am desperate to mend it. Luckily I have the broken handle so am hoping it can be re-attached. Most 'super glue' type products seem to be pretty hopeless, so what do people suggest as a good and permanent glue? I have a solvent based adhesive that I used in a recent…

Where to get Dulux Fast Matt Emulsion in 5L
Hi All, My son's flat is decorated in white Dulux Fast Matt Emulsion and there are one or two areas that need a bit of touching up but our local Dulux trade centre only has it in 10L tubs at around £40. I've tried other matt white emulsions which match the colour fine but they still have a very slight sheen to them due to…

Honeywell thermostat problems
My mum's got a problem with her central heating thermostat - it's acting like the temperature is higher than it actually is. So to get it to switch the heating on, the dial needs to be turned up to a silly high temperature, it then makes a little 'click', and switches the heating on. It will then heat the house normally,…

Boiler repair advice
I have a saunier duval F30E combi boiler. It's been faultless for 6 years and still works fine, but I seem to have a small issue with a valve that needs replacing. Last autumn I drained the whole system and flushed it out, refilled and added fresh inhibitor. I've bled the rads a few times since to get all of the air out of…

Toilet Seat
Hi, I know it sounds like a strange thing for someone to put in this forum, but we are struggling. We are looking for a replacement toilet seat, but our toilet is more circular than oval so the toilet seats I've seen in Homebase or B&Q won't fit properly. Does anyone know where else to get something like this?
