Finding a welder

Hiya,
I've got a bracket that's come of that needs tack welding back on. It's a little thing about 2cm x 8cm. I don't know much about welding, but I would have thought it's only a few minutes work.
The problem is finding a welder in my area. Googling just seems to suggest companies that build bridges and industrial installations. Any suggestions of where I can find someone who will take on a 2-minute job for a few quid? The only quote I've had so far was £100 which seems a bit steep considering the work involved.
What other trades do welding and might consider a quick side-job - car repair garages.. anyone else?
Cheers
Pete

Is it something you can take somewhere or does it need done in situ?
If you can take it somewhere like a metal work shop, they might help out. Or what about a local college?Herman - MP for all!0 -
If its portable take it down to your nearest garage.

Check out your local gumtree, you can even put an add up there, bit too far for me tho mate.
Hope you get sorted...........:beer:0 -
Farm machinery suppliers might also be worth a try. As suggested, independent garages and colleges are worth trying.
You can buy a complete stick-welding kit for under £100, eg. http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/clarke-160n-easi-arc-welder. If the bracket is not safety-critical, and is made of steel at least 2mm thick, then a cheap stick-welder might be a good DIY solution. You will need to practice on scrap steel with similar dimensions before tackling the main job though. If the bracket is made of thin material, or something other than mild steel, then welding it may be more challenging.
You could try posting a message in the forum on this site: http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/ Despite the name, it covers all types of welding.0 -

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help. Yes it is a fairly small part so I could take it somewhere. I've now posted on Gumtree and that welding forum, but if I don't get a reply any time soon I may well take Ormus up on his very generous offer!0

Be warned. It will arrive back with some sort of silly picture engraved on it too.:rotfl:
