Replacing thermostat help

Hi, I have this thermostat in the hallway that apparently doesn't work - the gas man told me and he said that he'd disconnected it and to only use the radiator to adjust the temperature.
I tried this for a while, but I find it really difficult to achieve a right temperature, so would it be possible to replace the thermostat? Is it straightforward for me to do or do I need to call back the gas man? And could anyone recommend a decent one? Thanks!
Edit to add, it's for central heating...

What is the make and model of the one you currently have? If you can idenfify that then a like for like replacement that utilises the same cabling can be recommended.

It's Wickes own that looks a bit like this, but even cheaper:

You say it's like that one but cheaper. Does the one you have only use two wires? If so, you may not need a three-wire one with an anticipator. If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!0 -

I haven't got a clue! It was here when we moved in.
Looks cheaper and older, no fancy switch on the side like the one in the link, just the temperature dial with Wickes on it!
How do I know if it's three of two wires?0 -
What is an anticipator?0
