"Chimney cleaning" products

Several offerings of strange chemicals promise to turn chimney creosotes dry so they will flake off easily - either on their own or when you sweep the chimney.
Has anyone used these? To what effect? Is there a preferred product?
I also wonder about calculating a best buy - supposing they are effective and their chemical action is beneficial.
Thank you from a woodstove operator.
