Painting - professional decorator vs DIY
We need the whole interior of our new 3-bedroom house painted. Currently it's covered with a single layer of 1970s wallpaper (unpainted). Once the wallpaper has been stripped, our options are to: - get a professional painter and decorator to prep the walls and paint. Quoted about £2300 for the whole lot including ceilings,…

Need new sofa - but what if the area is too small?
I've been looking at buying a new sofa - a leather recliner. My sofa has a curved corner, so even though it is technically longer that the space allows, it works. I have a wall at one end, and a door on the back wall at the other end. So any longer and a sofa would 'cross' the door to a cupboard I use every day. I've…

BARKER STONEHOUSE - return policy before recieving goods?
I looked at their website before i purchased some goods at their return policy, saying as long as it was on INSTOCK item you are intitled to a full refund before the items arrive. However, i now have a feeling this is just a policy for online orders, and not instore orders. I went into the store, with this reassurance from…

Conservatory glass roof - your real life experiences please!
I am currently planning a conservatory, and am getting very bogged down in the different roofing glass available. There is a lot of sales blurb about how good each version is or how brilliant different coatings are - but not so many unbiased reviews from the customers. So I am asking if anyone has any experiences of glass…

Anyone used Dulux Endurance matt emulsion?
As the title says, has anyone used Dulux Endurance matt emulsion, and if so what did you think of the result? I want a matt paint that can be cleaned easily, and I am wondering if it really is matt. I've got Dulux brilliant white matt emulsion in the kitchen and that has a lovely soft appearance.

Paint for outside bench?
Hi there I have got a wooden bench in my garden that I want to paint shiny, lipstick red. All the outdoor woodstain I see in B&Q etc. are all brown, blue or green and matt. I was wondering where I can get some shiny, bright red paint that will protect my bench outside? Surely this sort of wood stain must exist- people…

Painting ceiling above shower
Probably a daft question but I want to repaint the ceiling in my shower room and am wondering how to access the area above the shower cubicle. It is a large walk in shower and the only way I can reach the ceiling above would be to put a step ladder inside the cubicle. Is it safe to do this? I am scared the legs of the…

Under floorboard Insulating - okay for gap between floorboard and insulation?
Details: 1930's house, ground floor floor boards (with 2 foot cavity below joists). Due to ventilation below joists I want to insulate under the floorboards. To save lifting all floorboards I've decided to tac battening to the joists then run Jablite insulation board along the battens. I've just lifted boards from either…

Tefal Pro Express GV8430 Steam Generator Iron
Just looking to replace my Tefal GV 9110 Steam Generator Iron ... well-used 4 years old, but now on way out :( ... so spent quite some time on t'internet. Fancied the GV8430 (new model, but basically updated GV8330, which had great reviews) but at £260+ was more than double what I paid for my GV9110; however, finally came…

electric kettle, combi boiler or gas hob to heat water to wash dishes
Anybody know if it's cheaper to use an electric kettle, combi boiler or gas hob to heat water to wash dishes. Also is it cheaper to boil kettle or boil on gas hob to make a cuppa? It takes ages for hot water to come through to the sink from the combi boiler (which is in the kitchen) - it runs from cold to warm to hot) and…

Lino/vinyl flooring
I am looking for a shop. store where you can buy remnants, offcuts of lino/vinyl flooring. Actually, new rolls will be fine if it is reasonably priced. So far the cheapest is Carpet right at 10.99 per s.m which is out of my budget. It can be purchased online but the delivery date is too far ahead as I need to do the floor…

Lamin8 rustic oak flooring but the trim they use is not!
We are having lamin8 rustic oak flooring laid through downstairs apart from the kitchen area. The fitter has put down the flooring in the lounge but the trim around the fireplace is 'oak', neither the same shade or pattern! Apparently this is the trim for our flooring supplied by the manufacturers. It looks so different…

Carpet fitting and no space to move furniture.
Hi My bedroom needs a carpet. I can move most of the furniture but there is nowhere to put the bed without trying to get it downstairs and into the garden. It's a small room and the bed takes up a lot of space. Can't believe I am the only one who has had this problem!! Did you manage to work around it? Did the carpet…

Carpets or Doors first?
I reckon I should get the new carpets and wooden floor down first, then replace the internal wooden doors. Does that sound logical?
