House buying and structural report worries!
Hi all, My wife and I are hoping to buy our first house. We've found a property that we really like and are contemplating putting an offer in! However, the fly in the ointment is that there was previously another potential buyer who had a survey done by a chartered surveyor. The surveyor reported that the roof was too…

Easy to take apart dishwasher?
Hey, we're just about to replace our dishwasher, as it's got too annoying. I've noticed that the rotating arms have got food/bits inside them, but they can't be taken apart so it's a case of trying to get them out with a fork/pin. This is very annoying, and I guess is because the filter has failed somewhat. Basically, I…

Turning down the water temperature?
This might be a daft question, but we have just moved house from our new build flat to an older house from the late 70's. The house has barely been touched since the 70's and has a crappy old boiler hidden behind a faux fireplace in the living room. In our flat, the combi-boiler had the ability to control the water…

Kitchen Smells
I was just wondering what the best options are for neutralising kitchen smells after cooking? Basically we have just found out that my wife is pregnant (12 week scan next week), and she has become very susceptible to smells, so much so, that this morning, the smell of dinner last night triggered her morning sickness even…

Is it a party wall?
About to knock down my (1940s) garage to build an extension. Our (unattached) neighbour's garage is built directly against our garage - basically we both have single-skinned garage walls which touch. To my mind, this isn't a party wall as there are two walls built up to the boundary but not straddling it. They already have…

Locked In!

How should you pay when you ask someone to pick up IKEA items for you?
Can you help me with this question? A local joiner agrees to collect items at IKEA store for me. He will carry the items to my home and begin the assembly process. But I don't know how or how much I should pay him in advance. Can I pay the full amount to IKEA online and then give him the reference number to collect the…

Sander stopped working
I have a B&D sander, not an expensive one. I was sanding with it and I noticed some sparks started around the motor area. Then it stopped working and after leaving it for a day, it still doesn't work and has a slightly burnt smell around the motor area. Has something burnt out, the rotor? And is it worth doing anything to…

New shower hose for power shower - diameter?
I have a pumped power shower (which is great, really powerful) but the shower hose recently devloped a leak. I also have a shower attachment from the mixer tap on the bath, so I've tried just swapping the hoses over (we hardly ever use the bath-attached shower, except for cleaning the bath, so for the short term this…

Home Extension planning software

Building Regs Required??
Hi. We are in the process of buying our first house so are new to all this. The house we are buying is fine except the kitchen is '70's style. What we thought of doing to give us more room in there is to block the doorway up to the dining room. We would still have access to the dining room via the hall & living room (at…

Advice regarding laminate flooring and applicances
Hi, were having new laminate flooring laid in the kitchen next week instead of lino, would anyone recommend having caster wheels fitted to all the appliances or felt pads. The reason is that we have ruined to pieces of lino in the past and I have seen what happens when you move furniture over laminate. Any ideas or…

Sending parcels to Norway
Hey everyone I have searched the forums quite extensively, but can't figure out why it is so expensive to send parcels to Norway. There is a section about sending parcels cheaply on the main site, and I have tried every one of the quoted sites. Many of them start off by saying "international delivery from..." but when you…

Boiler losing pressure but cant find a leak.
I'm worried I may have to have an expensive visit from the plumber in the not too distant future... My combi boiler seems to be slowly losing pressure, at rate of about 10th of a bar every two days. I can't see any leaks (most of the pipes are exposed and those that aren't are in the ceiling where a leak like this would…
