Washing machine bearings - cost
I think the bearings may have gone on my Hotpoint washing machine (WT721) - approx. 4 years old. Makes an enormous racket when spinning. We moved it at weekend to try and see what was wrong and there was a pile of black soot underneath machine. Hotpoint are quoting £105 for one off repair or £14.99 for 12 months (if they…

Cavity wall insulation - does it deteriorate?
Hi We have an old house that apparantly was fitted with cavity wall insulation back in the 70's (got holes in the wall and a certificate) lol! Can anyone advise if the insulation deteriorates over time please as the house feels cold most of the time despite new windows. If so, how do you know what state its in? Thanks

Solar Inserts for Conservatory
I've been checking out solar inserts as a much cheaper alternative to replacing broken old blinds on a conservatory roof. What are people's experiences with them? Do they work? Is one companies' insert better than another? Indeed, is there anyone to avoid? I'd be wanting them fully fitted. Cheers.

smoke alarms
Hi, I've got two smoke alarms (upstairs/downstairs). Both electrical with battery back up. The one upstairs started beeping so I changed the battery, but it still beeped so I changed it again but it still kept me awake!!! Eventually I disabled it with the view the downstairs one is still on. But as soon as I did that the…

For the love of god, be careful when doing your own insulation!
Hi all, Just a warning from a complete idiot - I bought a bunch of attic insulation from homebase on their EON £3 a roll deal and decided to insulate my own attic. Make sure you wear a face mask, eye protection and a tight fitting work suit with no gaps and a hood. After spending an hour fitting the insulation, I came down…

Hi, Just moved into a new home and was aware some of the sealed units had gone as condensation in between the panes. Windows are looking a bit tired(but still serviceable) and quite old so not sure if it is worth getting new sealed units or replace the whole window. Two bed 1930 terrace. Any views on replacing or repairing…

Grrr, window cleaner scratched the brickwork
Window cleaner came round earlier and he managed to scratch the wall with his ladder  is there anything I can do to somehow repair the damage or will it eventually disappear? Window cleaner just shrugged his shoulders when I complained so I told him not to bother coming back.

Fixing glass lampshade - what glue?
I have a beautiful lamp, shaped like a snowdrop, so the shade and bulb point down. The glass shade has pulled away from its metal and is threatening to fall off and break. OH has glued it with Superglue a couple of time, but the repair doesn't last more than a couple of months. I'd be very grateful if anyone can recommend…

Washing Machine
Someone recommeded using Soap crystals to prevent a build-up of limescale in the washing machine and should be done at least once a month, it can also be used for other things such as the sink etc. Are there any other products worth considering. Thanks, Garcon6

Tarmac vs Block paving drive
We have decided to do our drive and will be doing all groundwork ourselves so will all be prepared and will just need to get someone in to lay the tarmac only. If we block pave we lay that ourselves. Which will last longer as we aren't planning on moving for at least 20 years? Which will be cheaper per sq metre?

Integrated applicences kitchen fitters advice?
Hi, We are having integrated appliences installed in our new kitchen. I was wondering if they tend to fit fluch against the wall at the back or if there is anyt sort of a gap? One appliance a Bosch washer dryer WKD28350GB says it has a depth of 584mm and the cabinates are only 575mm! We really don't have much space to play…

Eaga Cavity Wall Insulation - £129 - A Con?!
These guys appeared at my door the other day offering "free" cavity wall insulation for my property (4 bed, detached house, built 2006 by Kier Homes Scotland) if anyone in my house was on benefits. No-one is, but they said I could still get it for £129, despite it costing upwards of £2,000, as they could access a grant…
