Eaga Cavity Wall Insulation - £129 - A Con?!

These guys appeared at my door the other day offering "free" cavity wall insulation for my property (4 bed, detached house, built 2006 by Kier Homes Scotland) if anyone in my house was on benefits.
No-one is, but they said I could still get it for £129, despite it costing upwards of £2,000, as they could access a grant that would reduce it substantially to the £129 mark.
The agreement they wanted me to sign:-
(a) Didn't appear to fix the price @ £129, as it was subject to additional costs if they were found to be necessary;
(b) Didn't mention the process for applying for the grant - if they couldn't get the full grant, or indeed the grant at all, it was ambiguous as to whether they would take the risk on the unfunded grant or whether that would be passed to me (I strongly suspected the latter);
(c) Appeared to suggest that by signing, I was authorising the works to be carried out prior to either (a) or (b) being agreed.
As I was unsure exactly what I was signing, I declined to sign it, despite them being extremely pushy.
Is this for real?!
Anyone else had this experience and actually instructed the works to be carried out and able to share their experience?

I never go with services offered by people randomly knocking on my door. If grants are available they will be accesable to all the insulation installing companies so take you pick or ring a couple and ask if this 'grant' exists. If it sounds too good to be true it probably isYNWA

My upstairs neighbour and I had wall and roof insulation carried out by Eaga. We each paid £99.
This was done in May last year. The had originally visited the previous November and said it would be done that winter. hmmm
No other problems though, hard to tell if it's made any difference as it has been so cold this year.0 -
If your house was built in 2006, then it should already have Cavity Wall Insulation.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

They mentioned that it will have cavity insulation that will be to the minimum size specific by building regulations - and that based on other similar properties in our area that it was a thin piece of cavity board.
However, they said that the total cavity space was 3-4x this size, and obviously the more insulation pumped in there the greater the effect.
Of course, not sure how true all of that is!!0 -
I'm not convinced at all. All the cavities I have seen of that age or younger are full thickness inulation. Can't help thinking they are door knocking con menEat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

Hi
I signed up for EAGA cavity wall and loft insulation in October. I had to chase them in December to come and do the job. Then when they did they couldn't finish the job, they didn't bring a conservatory ladder even though it was on the order form and I had reminded them of the need when I called them to ask when the job was getting done.
3 months latter I'm still waiting to get the job finished. I'm refusing to pay the invoice until they complete the job. I've called them 4 times and waited in twice on the agreed days, both times they haven't turned up and haven't bothered calling.
I wouldn't recommend EAGA to anyone.0 -
If there is a grant system in place, you should be able to access it by contacting your local council - there are probably details on their website.
My local council was offering cavity insulation for £99 this winter, installation was by Mark Group. I contacted the council that they got the relevant people to call me - this is probably a safer way to do it if you are unsure about the company that knocked on your door. There was a maximum area for this price though, my 3 bed end terrace (built in 2003) was only just within the size for the fixed price, so you may find there would be an extra cost.
From what I can gather, building firms put no/bare minimum insulation in place so it's usually worth doing. The installers told me they'd been doing 2 year old houses the week before!Shrinking my mortgage!

Check your Local Authority's web site first (or give them a call). Had mine done last year (LA freebie), and since then have had several calls and door-knockers trying to flog the same thing. One of them even suggested that it's now EU law that you have 2 feet of loft insulation (I complained to Trading Standards about that one - dunno if it made any difference).
Anyway, seems like there is a bit of an insulation 'gold rush' at the moment - dunno if the companies get anything out of govt for works done, or whether a number of firms over-expanded on the back of LA work.0
