For the love of god, be careful when doing your own insulation!

Hi all,

Just a warning from a complete idiot - I bought a bunch of attic insulation from homebase on their EON £3 a roll deal and decided to insulate my own attic.

Make sure you wear a face mask, eye protection and a tight fitting work suit with no gaps and a hood.

After spending an hour fitting the insulation, I came down feeling like I'd been screwed by a cactus. Every inch of my body was itchy, I had a nasty cough that took days to clear and my eyes were sore. Took an hour of scrubbing in the shower just to start feeling semi-normal again!

It's a great money saver, but don't put your health at risk just to save a few quid!

Good point. You can get brilliant respirator mask £20, Goggles circa £3 & elasticated disposable bodysuit all from Screwfix if your fitting/moving insulation.

Sorry, bit late for OP, hope your feeling better now

aye a pretty nasty job for any amateur.
also beware: that some peeps are much more sensitive to glass fibre than other peeps.
some jobs are worth the few extra quid for getting a man in.
    Get some gorm.

Thought you were going to say you put your foot through the ceiling!

    It is horrible stuff though

  • Tell me about it - I had a great lump of the stuff drop onto my head and (bare) shoulders when DH was 'tidying' the loft.

    One word - OUCH! :(

The last lot that I bought was contained in a thin plastic cover. It went down easily with minimum discomfort.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

I wish I had known about it before I started - sadly I went for the cheapy stuff that EON are offering through Homebase for £3 a roll. Was worth the discomfort tho!

It's odd isn't it. I redid my attic insulation and had no problems at all. I did wear a dust mask but that was all.

Edit: When I said all I wore was a dust mask, I didn't mean that that was all I wore. If you see what I mean.

    ...erk. itchy. :rotfl:
  • I recommend using Loft insulation made using Recycled plastic bottles...it's fantastic...did a very large loft and no itching. It looks like "artificial snow" and works a treat.Keep an eye out for special offers.

Another thing to be aware is to make sure that you have adequate ventilation up there. Get some tile or easy vents fitted
