Front door - advice needed!

Hi all

We need to get a new front door fitted and after looking online are a bit confused as there seems to be quite a few different types at different prices!!

Has anyone got any advice over the best sort to go for or any good companies that supply/install? (Based in Manchester)

We're just looking for one that's nice and secure (our current one could probably be kicked in a bit too easily!) and probably a black door to go with our drains, fencing etc.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

    Hi,

I can recommend composite doors. They look much nicer than plastic and are more secure.

We had a composite door fitted last year with quite a large glass surround for just over £1000. It was more expensive than plastic but everybody comments how nice it is.

Ask family or friends for any recommendations of fitters in you area.

  • or a metal skinned composite.

Glass penels, if large enough can be laminted f you want extra security.

I would strongly recommend that any dead lock is key operated from the outside and fob turn internally. This allows you to get out in the event of a fire at night without hunting for a key. The right night latch can be dead locked if you are away from home and want to stop anyone leaving by the front door

    highly recommended.
    standard doors 390 quid.
    composite doors from 490 quid.
    Get some gorm.
  • +1 for a composite door - I have a couple of these (with big teeth top and bottom) and they are excellent. They cost a lot more but I think they're worth it. If you're getting euro-cylinder locks make sure they're anti-snap/anti-bump types.

    Hi Grim

Can you post examples of both types, ie the good ones and the bad ones?

I had assumed they would have those features as standard.

    Thanks

Some doors come with a decent lock, some don't.

It's relatively easy to break a standard/cheap euro-cylinder at the weak point (snapping) or force the pins to align with the right tool (bumping) - a burglar managed to break into a neighbours house by snapping the lock so I upgraded mine to ones recommended by our local crime prevention officer.

Another MSE thread where it is discussed (or argued about :D) in detail...

Yes, and I have used based on ormus' recommendation. We paid £600 for the front door, as we chose Rehau, and different colours as well. They were the best and cheapest we saw around.

That is what we decided when we were fitted our doors! We were thinking to put a composite door for the back, thinking it would be safer, but then we had a 'moment of light' that we also have patio doors, that are all glass, and ended up getting a fully glazed door for the kitchen as well.

You house is only as safe as the weakest point of entry!

Maybe not but laminated glass will slow down any attempted entry...
