Need a structural engineer in Southend Essex
Hi, I'm having an extension built and the council building inspectors have questioned the roof design - which is hipped - and said we need to get some calculations done, presumably to prove it will stay up. Does anybody have details of a good structural engineer in the Southend, Essex area? Jim

Earthing, new meters, Area 10 and all that!!!!
Hi, Has anyone had a gas or electricity meter changed recently and found that the company hasn't reconnected the Earth? We had a British Gas boiler service today and he said when the meter was changed they hadn't reconnect the earth and that this was quite a common problem. I've phoned our supplier with a simple request to…

Worktop man wants 1/3 upfront to avoid price hike
I've had a quote of £3600 from an independent worktop company for Staron (almost identical to Corian) counters for our new (as yet unordered) kitchen. There's lots of work (new windows, plumbing, plastering) to be done in our kitchen before we can have new units fitted, so I explained to the worktop man that we wouldn't be…

Edging carpet to make a rug
Rather than pay a small fortune for a large rug for our lounge (for babba to roll around on, we have laminate beneath), today we purchased a carpet offcut for a bargain price. Does anybody have any MSE/OS ideas on how we can neatly bind the edges to stop it fraying as we walk? Other than duct tape, which I found suggested…

Paddling Pool Repair
We've got one of those big 10' diameter paddling pools, which has just one inflatable ring at the top and as you fill it with water the sides rise up. The kids ( and all their friends from the neighbourhood ! ) absolutely love it. However, the inflatable ring has a slow puncture - the inevitable result of a group of…

Advice Please
Hello, a little bit of a long one but advice needed. Our neighbours (who we do not see eye to eye with) have decided to suspend their large bushes off of our fence by cable tying them to the uprights of the panels (not the posts) that stop the fence falling apart. Obviously, the fence is now broken (uprights are now…

Anyone had Rockwool external insulation put on their house?
A lot of the council properties in the surrounding towns from us are having external cladding put on - having drove slowly past them I've seen its by the Rockwool brand - the cladding panels that then get rendered on top of. I'm very interested in this as we live in a metal pre-fab house and have been wanting it rendered…

Shutters
Has anyone had interior shutters fitted instead of curtains? If so, are you pleased with them or do you wish you hadn't chosen them? I'd like to have some in my bedroom but don't know if there's any drawbacks. (no pun intended!)

Part P - is it on the way out?
We are currently looking at getting some electrical work done on our house, and have had a few electricians around to quote. One of them last week told us that he was not Part P registered (lapsed membership) so he could not give us that cert at the end of the work, however he could give us a Testers cert. His reasoning…

freestanding kitchens
Anyone know of a reasonably priced freestanding kitchen supplier? Ideally oak? I can't understand why a free standing kitchen has to cost thousands when say oakfurnitureland or similar can do solid oak sideboards for hundreds. This is especially the case when the said sideboards would do as kitchen base units if it had a…

Has anyone got a corner fireplace?
I'm looking at a house with a corner fireplace in the living room, it will probably have a multifuel stove eventually, though maybe just an open fire. However, I can't see how you would place furniture round it to be cosy. I've looked at photos on Google but none of them look snuggly and cosy as I would want - the focus of…

remove stickers from UPVC door?
Hi, can anyone recommend a cleaning product that will remove the remnants of some foam sticker things my kids stuck to our front door? Would WD40 work? What can I use that won't damage/scratch/discolour the plastic? I've searched the forums for advice, but most threads on cleaning UPVC seem to be more about removing…
