freestanding kitchens

Anyone know of a reasonably priced freestanding kitchen supplier? Ideally oak?

I can't understand why a free standing kitchen has to cost thousands when say oakfurnitureland or similar can do solid oak sideboards for hundreds. This is especially the case when the said sideboards would do as kitchen base units if it had a harder wearing tops and are much better quality being solid oak than a lot of the freestanding kitchens are.

People put a higher value on a kitchen made of chipboard than solid wood furniture so the suppliers attempt to charge us accordingly

Also, generally kitchens are made in the UK and to order with local labour costs. OakFurnitureLand ships their goods from India by the container load and is probably only paying a few pounds labour for each piece.

I costed some kitchen cabinets and the materials to make them in solid oak were just under £100 for a drawerline base unit. The bulk of the cost comes from the labour, especially joining the wood together to give wide boards for sides/backs.

Your best bet is to get some quotes from a number of local woodworkers/carpenters. Ask for panels to be made in oak veneered MDF and everything else in solid oak. Saves materials and labour.
