Hi,
Has anyone had a gas or electricity meter changed recently and found that the company hasn't reconnected the Earth?
We had a British Gas boiler service today and he said when the meter was changed they hadn't reconnect the earth and that this was quite a common problem. I've phoned our supplier with a simple request to come out and reconnect and am getting some joy but it's painful - an huor on the phone so far. Wondering if anyone else has had this problem?

Get to near the end of the next call & say you have been taping it.
They will soon turn up.Not Again0 -
Well - after the call centre manager told me that earthing the house electric was 'not essential', 'only a recommendation' and 'not part of the regulation' I told them that I would sue if there was an accident and that seems to have done the trick. The engineer has just been and made a fix - of sorts anyway. He has taken the loose eatch cable and screwed it into a plastic gizmo that attaches to the main back board - which is made of wood. I did question this - before it was attached to the gas meter pipe which went to earth - and he said 'well the wooden board is screwed to the wall which goes to ground'. I'm not convinced myself !

It must be earth bonded within 600mm your side of the meter.
He is talking balls. Just read it in my book. Not Again0 -

& here is some stuff for the Gas Regs & Electrical Regs on it.Not Again0 -
Well he reckons screwing the earth cable to the wooden board is sufficient! It meets one criteria because it is within 600mm but I would have preferred it to be to the gas pipe as it was before0

He could be correct if you have a TT system. Could you post a pic of the installation in question?

According to someone I know at gas networks- they have a duty to reconnect any existing gas bond if it was there, this includes extending the wire using crimps to the pipe outside
Essentially they need to leave it no less safe than it was beforebaldly going on...0 -
