Fault with new carpet advice please
Hi all, We had a new carpet fitted on the stairs, hall and lounge about six weeks ago. There appears to be an area about a foot wide and 3-4 foot long in the lounge where It appears the pile goes in a different direction to the rest of the carpet. It isn't the path way from the doorway into the room so we know we have not…

new wooden door, swollen step-whats best?
Hi, We just had a new back door fitted, a solid wood one, which was untreated when fitted (wish he had left it with us after picking up, before fitting, so we could have painted it, but hindsight is 20-20 they say) We got a coat of primer undercoat on the door, and step, and have managed to gloss the door, but it has been…

Fake Front Door - Advice Please
Hi guys My partner and I have recently bought a Victorian semi that we're slowly doing up. In our front room there is, what was at one time the front door. From the outside of the house it looks like a fully functioning door, however from the inside it looks just like a window - the lower part of the door has been plaster…

Plumber has turned combi off
We've had an unpredictable boiler for a little while now. We contacted a local plumber who came over and said expansion vessell and pressure release valve are bust. This makes sense as the pressure has been variable from quite low to quite high and over the cold snap, the copper outlet pipe froze and the whole boiler was…

Energy saving bulbs.
We have gradually been changing lightbulbs to energy saving especially after getting 10 for £1 in argos a while back. Now in a few rooms we have spotlights and I am considering removing them and going back to normal lightpendants so we can put energy saving bulbs in. One problem we have in kitchen, it is 18ft long and we…

Lights blinking / flickering in the house
Strange problem which started a couple of weeks ago and is getting more noticeable. The house lights flicker out for a fraction of a second - fairly randomly. It seems to be getting worse and is happening every couple of minutes. It's not like the slight dimming you get when for instance, someone turns the shower on or a…

A friend of mine is looking at a house in a new estate and has been put off it by another friend who had trouble getting a mortgage for a house in the same estate. 'Garage' style shelving - any recommendations?
Hi there, I'm wondering if someone could offer me some recommendations? As the title suggests, I'm after some of the garage style shelving. It won't actually be going in a garage - I'm self employed and have a garment printing business in a spare (downstairs) room in my house. The large, deep, sturdy shelves would be ideal…

Electrical Junction Box rules
Evening all, Just wondered whether someone could clarify the rules with regards electrcial junction boxes.... ...I know they must remain "accessible" but what does this actually mean - what is and isn't allowed? Obviously buried in concrete is a no-no and sitting lovely and exposed on wall or in loft an easy yes. But hows…

Loose Covers v Re-upholstery
We have a lovely hand built suite of 2 & 3 seater settees, recliner chair & armchair that is getting shabby after about 20 years! We love the shape & size & I can't make up my mind whether to have the whole suit reupholstered (which would cost as much as a new one?) or to have loose covers on the settees & just the two…

Stone Look Render
I’m thinking about having the external walls of my bungalow rendered, they are dark red bricks which look awful and contrast badly with the smooth rendered extension. When I visited the US a few years ago I saw a type of wall render that resembles natural stonework, it looked just like the real thing, you had to look very…
