Lights blinking / flickering in the house

Strange problem which started a couple of weeks ago and is getting more noticeable. The house lights flicker out for a fraction of a second - fairly randomly. It seems to be getting worse and is happening every couple of minutes.

It's not like the slight dimming you get when for instance, someone turns the shower on or a high load appliance - more like someone is physically disconnecting the power for an instance, causing the lights to blink.

I don't think it's the lighting mains as it affects both upstairs and downstairs lights which are on separate mains. It also affects the alcove lighting either side of my fireplace which are spurred off a mains socket.

Any ideas what I can check? Should I call the electricity company?

Looks like I may have answered my own question! Knocked at the neighbours and they're having the same problem. Oh well phone the energy co!
