Painting over plaster
We've had a room plastered and skimmed and are now about to paint it. I know you can use PVA mixed with water as a primer coat but is there any ready mixed primer paint available to use instead? My OH is going to be doing the painting and would prefer something less messier than mixing PVA in a bucket and if the primer is…

How long to receive certificate after Part P work
We had our kitchen re-done last September and we still haven't received a certificate for the electrical work. We have chased this up with MFI several times and they always give the excuse that there is a backlog (not with them or their fitters but with the people who issue the certificates). I don't know how all this…

Foam backed carpet & uneven floorboards
I have a dilemma. We've been redecorating a bedroom that hasn't been lived in for a few years, and I'm at the point of addressing the floor. The old floorboards are uneven, but I've added nails to stop the creaking ones--but to answer the most obvious question, we can't afford to lay new floorboards. My dilemma is: do I…

Lightening took my fridge out!
We lost power here about 20 mins ago due to lightening hitting something near here  :T which took out the local lights for about a minute. Everything else seems to be working except the fridge. I've changed the plug fuse (tried two to check) but it's not coming on. Do I need to buy a fridge tomorrow?

Bathroom suite fitters
Hi there My neighbour is having a new bathroom suite fitted BUT today she noticed a leak in her frontroom. She told one of the workmen about the problem, which they tried to brush off (don't they all!), and during their 'investigations' to find the pipe they have sawn through several of her polished wood flooring (they…

House extensions
Hi this is probably something thats been mentioned before but I thought I'd ask just in case. My question is this, in regards to finding the best…

Cost of new locks?
We're moving soon and I've seen a thread elsewhere that put me in mind to change the locks when we move - I'd never thought of this  The house has wooden doors with those yale-type locks where you have to turn the handle upwards to lock them - does anyone know how much it would cost to have a locksmith replace these?…

Damp course - Freeholder or me?
I have to get damp proofing on the back wall of my house, as it's bubbling up and damaging the wood. Two things 1. Can anyone recommend anyone in the west london area? 2. DO you know whether the freeholder (who owns the flat upstairs) bears any responsibility for the work - should I only be paying half? Isn't it the case…
