Cost of new locks?

We're moving soon and I've seen a thread elsewhere that put me in mind to change the locks when we move - I'd never thought of this
The house has wooden doors with those yale-type locks where you have to turn the handle upwards to lock them - does anyone know how much it would cost to have a locksmith replace these? I would try myself as per a previous thread, but I haven't enough faith in the DIY skills of myself (or Mr Eels  ) to do something which is so important ...
So now, a terrible dilemma - a sofa, or new locks ...

Errrr .... maybe ... !
Can I hold up my hands and admit it ... I'm just a girl!0 -
These are the easiest type of all to change.
Open the door and there is a small machine screw head at handle height, remove the screw by turning it anti clockwise.
The euro cylinder then pushes right out of the hole that it is fitted in.
Put new euro cylinder in the lock and replace the screw.0 -
If you have a lock built into the door which you insert a key into the lock and levers turn the lock you would need to remove the lock and measure the dimensions (undo handles, remove spindle, remove faceplate on edge of door) . Any decent ironmonger will be able to offer you a replacement lock(assuming they aren't too old) ranging from a few pounds to well over £ 100.
If you actually insert your key into a cylinder as Roswell suggests then its a very simple task, remove the face plate on the edge of the door and a single screw holds the cylinder in place, remove the screw and slot a new cylinder into place.
Couple of things to bear in mind, the cost of a cylinder isn't an automatic indicator of qualtiy, the company I work for buys a high quality cylinder very cheaply, the manufacturer makes his profits on the fact that the keys are pattern protected and can only be cut by them so they charge a lot to replace keys! If you are replacing a cylinder sketch the end profile and measure the length and the position of the cam, an ironmonger can then make sure the cylinder will fit your door.
Sorry to babble, hope this helps!0 -
Sounds like just the ticket ... I shall advise Mr Eels accordingly and then personally oversee the project to completion.
In the event that he tells me where to go, will I be charged insane amounts if I get a pro in?0 -
Sorry haven't been about for a couple of days, there really shouldn't be any need to have a pro change the cylinder but if you do it should take no more than 10 minutes or so, so I'd guess at no more than £10, that would make £60 per hour! I'd like that kind of hourly rate!0
