Yes they work OK. There are various rating in kW or Btu/h just like electric heaters. They don't cost as much to run though because you get 2 or 3 times as much cooling as you use electricity. This is called the coefficient of performance or COP. You should note though that they have an exhaust to get rid of the heat and this really needs to go directly to the outside. They often come with a flexible hose, rather like a tumble drier which some people just hang out of the window but you really need a proper ducted exhaust - just like a tumble drier again.0

Hello. I am looking for a new air condition system for my bedroom/office - well scrap that, I've never had one before so it'd be my first.
Tje rpp, os 9ftx9ft approx, maybe a bit bigger and it's aobut 7ft high.
I'm not sure if it would be cheaper to buy the system first and then find a good engineer to install it, or to get the whole thing done from one supplier. Anyone got any ideas on what to do, estimated pricing etc. I'm in the Aberdeen area.
Thanks.

Air conditioning in Aberdeen !!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously, if you go for a professional unit it will cost a fair bit. The best solution is to get a mobile unit from B & Q or similar. £200 ish.
They can be a bit noisy though and ideally you want a proper vent hole through the wall - hanging the hose out of an open window is a bit self-defeating !0 -
Thanks, I'll look into it, it may not seem as though Aberdeen has a lot of hot days but recently and last summer show that not to be the case.

we have a b&q potable air con in our bedroom really good vented through the window last year but have just had it vented properly through the wall and is now much more effective0

Thanks. I've only just realised whilst doing some calculations in a spreadsheet that I'm in a rather serious position regarding funds, or at least will be if things don't improve within the next four months. Therefore, unless I manage to sell a lot of the stuff I have lying around at the moment, doesn't look like I'll be buying one of these units for a while.
Just out of curiosity, how much did it cost to have the machine vented through the wall? Also, can you still move it if you want, or is the wall venting setup fixed? Sorry for the question, but engineering and mechanics really aren't my strong points
Cheers and take care.

If you have a portable unit and don't want to connect it permanently through the wall, spend a minute to consider how to keep the window which the extract hose is vented through "sealed" as much as possible.
Personally I open the window I am venting through as little as possible, draw the curtains and use some clothes pegs to keep the curtains together and flush to the window sill.
I appreciate not everyone has curtains or window sills but if you can do this, it is surprisingly effective.
Thanks

Interesting, and sounds as though it might well work. I'll take that into consideration when I purchase the unit, probably later in the summer now.
Cheers and take care.

I'd seriously recommend one of these: http://www.celsiusair.co.uk/equipment/xpelair/xpelair.htm
They are oodles better than a portable system with a duct.
If you do decide to buy a portable system, double check before buying that it's not an evaporative cooler-they are rubbish.0 -
WOW! Pricy or what! But then it looks a good system. Definitely one to think about for when I win the lotto
Thanks.
Cheers and take care.
