Saw this in my local paper. These are systems with a seperate compressor and the control unit and vent mounted on the wall inside.

For up to 25 sq. m. rooms £595 installed
For up to 40 sq. m. rooms £695 installed
They even give you £100 off when you buy 2 units

I would have one if I was staying in my house long term. Hurry up because those are their sale prices which ends at the end of the month.

But those same systems were mentioned in post #14 cheaper!

The cost of running an air condition unit is horrendos no matter how small a unit.

Open a window and buy a small fan for £20 instead.

I can't see £239 on that site you mentioned, espresso. And was the £239 the installed price?

OddJobKIA: The cost is no more than heating a room in the winter. I would rather spend the money and be cool 2-3 months every year. I can't sleep in heat. A decent nights sleep is priceless.

Just opening the window is no good! It brings in bugs, mozzies who then bite you to death in the night, you also then get woken at 4 or 5am by all the birds and other noisy things eg milkman etc and early commuters. Fans make a racket and give me a stiff neck or back after its been blowing on me all night

Plus some nights the overnight temp is so high, 20 C or more, that opening the window won't help at all. It certainly won't help during the day when its 30 C outside!

    You need proper aircon.

The price of £239 that's been quoted here is TRADE price and EX VAT. They clearly mention all over their website that they sell to TRADE customers and offer free delivery for 5 or more units!

You can buy the same unit for £293.69 from http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/product.aspx?code=AAC-KFR36GW

Thats INC VAT but EX Delivery and they sell to Mr Joe Public.

    Hope that helps someone.

If you take the trouble to contact that company, they WILL sell to Mr Joe Public. Most companies who supply other companies quote prices ex VAT and obviously Mr Joe Public has to add this!

I'd seriously recommend one of these: http://www.celsiusair.co.uk/equipment/xpelair/xpelair.htm

They are oodles better than a portable system with a duct.

If you do decide to buy a portable system, double check before buying that it's not an evaporative cooler-they are rubbish.

So neat! Yes they are pricey but you don't have that awful, horrible unit outside. Now if we could just get them cheaper I'd have two!
  • I am going to be heavily pregnant during the summer this year and with predictions of an even hotter year than last I am starting to worry how I will get through it having seen pregnant friends struggle in 2006.

I am thinking of getting air conditioning and with the likelihood of summers getting hotter I wonder if it is worth investing in one being fitted on the wall as opposed to a portable unit.

Does anyone know how much it would cost to have it fitted, and if planning permission is needed.

Is it possible to have a dual system fitted? My bedroom is directly over the living room, and would be handy to have it fitted in both rooms. Does such a dual system exist?

I live in a detached house with about 3ft to the boundary, would this allow enough room for everything necessary that is fixed outside?

Also what maintenance is needed on such an appliance, is there a carbon monoxide risk?

Are there any good reputable firms out there that fit air conditioning units?

Sorry for my ignorance and many questions, but if you can give some advice it would be gratefully received.

    Many thanks
  • I don't think you need planning permission for Air con units.

Yes you can have a dual system fitted.

    They are costly.

B&Q do them for £400. Thats an outside fan unit and an inside unit for 1 room. You can fit more than 1 unit to the outside fan unit. An extra internal unit is about £150.

Bear in mind that Air Con units dehydrate you. So if you do get one drink lots of water!!!!!!!!!!

I've expanded my buisness into this area, home systems, in the last 12 months and the demand is incredible. Look at a cost of around 1k per unit fitted so in your case around 4k to do the whole house. Maintenance is low, clean the filters twice a year and a yearly check of the operation and gassing of the unit, you should have at least a one year service warranty included with fitting.

There are huge enviromental changes coming to the trade in in April of this year so the costs will rise significantly.

Don't touch the B+Q stuff and some of the units avaliable out there look incredible.

Theres no risk of carbon monoxide as its all electrical.

You sometimes need to get planning permission as the outdoor unit does make noise, although this is no more than a fridge freezer and a fan noise but still this can cause problems so positioning is important.

You would be better getting a split system fitted as these are more efficient as you dont have to have a hose out of window to vent the air out.
