We recently bought a new house. The house is on a large plot. Under some of the garden is a sewage pipe that run from neighbouring houses. Our waste meets this pipe at the bottom of the garden. Am I right that our water provider (welsh water) own the part that comes from neighbouring properties. I noticed today that the…

Fresh varnish bubbling on front door.
I recently sanded and varnished my front door. Shortly after, the varnish bubbled in a few places. Someone recommended that I sand the bubbles off down to the bare wood, and leave to dry in the heat for a while as the bubbles may be die to moisture trapped in the wood. If anyone can comment on this, and how long I should…

Black paint around bottom of exterior of house....
Hi all, I have some black paint which if touched transfers to your hands very easily. It’s around the bottom 3 courses of bricks of my modern rear extension and 4 courses of bricks ( although that appears to behave concreted over) I’m guessing it’s a method of damp proofing, maybe a bitumen type of paint. Unfortunately…

Sanitary ware for bathroom
I am looking for advice on sanitary ware for a bathroom refit. Can someone explain the pros and cons of "open back" or "closed back" for a "back to wall" toilet and cistern and which is the better option? Similarly, wash basin pedestals, "semi padastal" or "full padastal?

Worcester Boiler Sludge query
Hi, I have a Worcester Greenstar boiler. It is either 24i Junior or 28i Junior but (embarrassingly) I am not actually sure which... I have noticed recently that sometimes (not always) the shower will go cold after a few minutes and then eventually warm up again. I got the boiler serviced as it was due anyway and the…

Repairing windows
Not sure how I can upload a photo here from my mobile yet, but I have a stone built flat from 1898 and wooden windows. The windows are fine, but there is some kind of filler between the wooden window and the stone wall, falling away. The filler is hard to touch, but crumbles to touch. Any thoughts what it is, and how to…

Gas Safety Certificate
Hi everyone, We have just bought our first home and we got an electrician to come out to review our electrics. It turns out we need a full re-wire! I’m now conscious about our gas safety as we have a gas cooker (I’ve never had one before) and the boiler is 14 years old. I would like to get somebody to come out and have a…

Any architects out there?
The story so far: we have had simple plans drawn up by a friend (a technician) and have got our planning permssion for a single storey extension. He cannot do any further work for us due to personal and pressing reasons, so we agreed that we would engage an architect for the more detailed plans required by Build. Regs.…

What's it worth then?
Hi hive mind. We've recently had substantial work done on our house, work that will update it and add some living space. Also central heating, new windows and Velux, and a conservatory is being added. What is the most cost efficient way of getting the place valued? (all work was done by a registered and respected builder.)…

Archaeological survey
Hi, We've applied for planning for a 3 metre extension on the back of our house and planners have asked for an archaeological survey to be conducted. It's a bit unusual as it's a small extension and we're on a 1960's/70's estate and are one of a few houses who haven't extended. We've therefore queried why this has been…
