Spring Tension Rods

I've got a space 40" (102cm) from wall to wall, what size tension rod would I need to fit it? Thanks

You already know the answer to the question if you know the distance. Pick one which has 102cm within its range

But won't it need to be a smaller so that the spring thingy that comes out of the side, grips on to the wall? And if so, how much smaller?

I had no idea what you meant by "Spring Tension Rods" so I Googled it & now I know. Then you talked about a "spring thingy" coming out the side & now I don't know any more.

Do the ends not push inwards? if so, it needs to only show a minimum width of the same (or slightly smaller) than your gap, as long as the maximum is over 102 cm
