Archaeological survey

Hi,
We've applied for planning for a 3 metre extension on the back of our house and planners have asked for an archaeological survey to be conducted. It's a bit unusual as it's a small extension and we're on a 1960's/70's estate and are one of a few houses who haven't extended. We've therefore queried why this has been requested.
If we do have to conduct the survey our architect has recommended an archaeological consultant for £1100+VAT which we're not sure whether is good or bad?
Does anyone have any similar experience, costs, recommendations or advice?
Thanks in advance.
