Ex Military Opted Out
I joined the Army in 1971 and served 24 years. During my service, the Public Services 'Opted Out' of NI payments (Reduced donation to allow for more salary is how it was sold to us). I finished my service in 1995 and went into a further 21 years of engineering employment where full contributions were paid, and from which I…

NI Payments remain the same after reaching 35 qualifying state pension years (and SP2)
Hi folks, I know there's a lot of chat about state pensions, options to pay-up missing years and delaying taking the pension (to boost future years income). However, my first question may be a little basic and obvious (although not a lot of answers out there searching on the internet). My questions are: 1. Once you reach…

State pension top
I am a 62 year old retired teacher in receipt of my teachers pension. If i don’t work during again (not at all likely) before reaching state retirement age at 66 and a half I will be 4 years short of the full state pension despite 41 years of contributions. Is it worth making up the extra 4 years as I would inevitably pay…

NI Credits
I am after some guidance after being given contradictory advice from the future pensions department. I am due to claim my state pension in April 2024 and need to pay four years NI contributions if I wish to claim the full pension. When checking the gaps in my records, there was a period from 2005 to 2008 when no…

Confusion over Voluntary NIC DD
I've just had a letter from HMRC saying I need to pay an extra £226 to cover 3 months from Jan-April 23. However my direct debits were paid every month up until (and including) March and then for some reason just stopped, even though I have been paying voluntary contributions every month since July 2019. They haven't taken…

Over-paying voluntary NIC in case future gov changes finishing post?
I wonder if it's worth paying more than the currently necessary years in case a future goverment changes the rules so that, for example, by the time I retire, the qualification for a full pension might have increased to 40 years of contributions?

Daily Mail feature on topping up the state pension 14th June 2023
Money Mail (Daily Mail) today has headlined a three page feature on topping up the state pension by paying for 'missing' years of NI contributions, taking credit (sic) for the extensions of the time period by ten years and the new deadline of April 2025. Unfortunately they have promoted the opportunity with sensationalist…

Paying Class 2 voluntary NICs whilst living in Canada
My son moved to Canada in 2012 and has been working there ever since. He has no plans to return to the UK. Currently he has 9 years of NICs. I know with the bilateral arrangement with Canada he can use his Canadian equivalent of NI so he meets the eligibility here for the minimum of 10 years. However it appears that he can…

Future Pension Centre helpline
Is anyone else having problems getting through to the FPC? I have been calling on and off since February. I have tried calling at all different times of the day, but once navigating to select the option "I have a query about my state pension forecast" I then just get cut off. I wouldn't mind if I managed to get in the…

State Pension Top Up - very very small shortfall
I am 59 and have taken early retirement. I don’t plan to work prior to receiving state pension. My forecast is 18p per week short of the maximum. All years complete since 2006. Not really a problem, I know!! Is there any payment I can make to gain the maximum state pension that is not £800ish?

The utter disgrace and scandal of DWP and the near-impossibility of getting advice on topping up
I have today, after must time-wasting – endless calls with multiple
choice dial-ins all of which warned that the high volume of calls might result
in my being cut off before I was answered – paid £650 to top up four missing
years of my State Pension, which I will be claiming from September when I turn
66. Whatever number I…
