Grandparent Topup's - Specified Adult Childcare Credits

Options
My wife is 62 and shy of a full state pension by 4 years. We will be topping up but obviously would like to pay as little as possible.
Our grandson was born end of 2019 and even during covid she has been looking after him. Our daughter-in-law apparently only got SMP and didn't get enough to pay NI or tax. We have tried to contact various government departments to see if my wife can claim for partial year credits, to allow us to top up to the full year for less outlay but no-one seems to have an answer, forwarding us on to department after department.

Does anyone have the answer? Can we claim for partial tears or does it have to be full years?

You claim for each week when you were looking after the child for some time in that week, NI credits are weekly.  You should not really claim for a whole year on the basis you looked after the child for a few weeks but it seems many do and HMRC don't seem to care.  The form is quite clear on how to fill it in.

Will your daughter-in-law need the credit herself? If she does your wife cannot have it. Or is this why you’re thinking of claiming part years?
