UK Savings when Child reaches Adulthood
Years ago, I opened two Royal Bank of Scotland First Saver Accounts for my children. Now that they are both over 18, I’ve started receiving emails advising them to transfer the funds to a different account. The issue is that we are not UK residents and do not have a physical UK address or proof of residence. However, we…

Login problems with Cahoot
I have a Simple Saver account with Cahoot for a few months. Last week, I attempted to login to the account and it would not accept the password that I entered, the one that I normally use. Have always had problems logged in too as was always returned back to the login page every time I clicked on a link. After a few more…

New to Crypto - What to do if you make a lot of profit?
I recently decided to buy some crypto (with money I can afford to lose). I'm a complete novice in all areas to do with tax and banking, I just know the very basics. I was wondering if one of the currencies suddenly shot up in price and I made, say £200,000 profit what would the normal man in the street (me) have to do,…

Help to save regular payment not showing in help to save account
I set up a regular payment (standing order) to leave my bank account. I copied the account number, sort code and reference exactly as it was. It needed a 'name', so I saw people on here had just named it something like HTS so I did and it came up 'it's a match' on my banking app. Anyway, the money has left my bank account,…

Buying China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) shares HK00883
Dear All I am trying to buy China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) shares but the three online platforms I use say they do not trade shares in the company because they are 'restricted'. I even approached CNOOC directly for advice but just got the unhelpful response 'ask your broker'! Can anybody please suggest a…

Does a Capital Gain of less than £3k have to be declared if completing an SA?
Again, something I'm not totally clear on & guessing some others might be similar. During tax years 22-23 & 23-24 I built up a holding of a Silver ETC (various purchases totalling a cost of £10,011.26 excluding fees, no sales) I sold the lot in Feb '25 for £12,953.77 excluding fees (then repurchased over 30 days later but…

Reporting interest from Gilts on self-assessment
I'll be doing this for the first time next week so just wanted to check my understanding (am guessing a few others might be similar) I own T26 unwrapped and received £15.80 "dividend" on 24th March 2025. I understand this is treated and taxed as income from interest. Is this how I report it on SA: Other UK incomeInterest…

tax on investment return
I am trying to compare locking away £100k v investing it in relation to how much tax I would pay on any gains. I can work out that if I locked the money away at 4.5% for 5 years I would gain £24617 before tax and £19700 after tax, at my current basic tax rate. I have used my £1k allowance already. Can someone please let me…

Woodford fund, bizarre BBC article
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx2gw5y8er7oThe thrust of the article seems to be, but for the redress scheme, investors would have had a claim on the FSCS, which would have given them (or some of them) a better outcome than was achieved by the redress scheme. My understanding is the fund was frozen and then wound up.…

Understanding savings tax
I don't fully understand this savings tax. If you earn you have to pay tax on it. That money goes into your bank account. You then can be taxed if the interest the bank pays? What about ISA? What if you have a current account? What if you have multiple current accounts? What if you have multiple savings accounts? When does…
