Mis-sold bond?
Parents had an ISA with Lloyd's, Dad just received letter detailing maturity of what he thought was an ISA, turns out he'd moved his money from an ISA into a 2 yr fixed rated bond. Due to the sums involved he is probably going to be hit with a tax bill on the interest. No idea has to how this has happened. I believe my dad…

Regular savers strategy (paydays varying)
If one receives two benefit payments on variable days of the month, in order to reduce faff, could it make sense to withdraw predicted monthly expenditures plus a 30% buffer to one's current account from an instant access savings account (which has a higher interest rate than one's current account) on the first day of the…

Company sharesave cgt
Hi, I have a company sharesave scheme which matures in November. I have been putting £500 per month for 5 years so by November my initial investment will be £30000 but the shares are now worth approx £110000. Approx profit of £80000. My question is in regards to capital gains tax. I understand the rules may change by…

£1000/500 tax free savings interest question
I accidently went into the 40% tax threshold on earnings (just by £500) . I understand the tax free savings threshold is reduced to £500 from £1000. Question - Are the savings over £500 then taxed at 20% or 40%? If they are that seems a double whammy????

CGT for Gilts
I'm quite partial to holding short-term Gilts to maturity, having been severely burned by Gilt ETFs in 2022. On Friday I bought some both for my company, and in my dealing account. Unfortunately on the latter I had a brain-fade and bought a high- rather than low-coupon one. Usually I buy low-coupon when not buying through…

Sharesave maturity options
Hi all, Looking for some advice as I've not done this before. I've gained £4500 from a sharesave scheme (put in approx £6k now worth approx £10.5k). My exercise choices are now: - keep the shared in a corporate sponsored nominee - keep the shares as a share certificate - Sell the shares and receive the proceeds I want to…

FSCS query
Hi, I’m new to this forum and hoping for some advice with a query. I have had a monthly savings plan with Fidelity for a number of years. The value of all investments now exceeds £85k of which about two thirds are Fidelity’s own funds and a third managed by other companies with Fidelity the distributor. I’ve always been…

Tax on savings
My bank has given me interest on my savings as its the start of a new year, and its gone over the £1000 threshold. I've got two regular savings accounts, so I think the government will turn up to steal some of it (tax). I work full time and am normally taxed the basic rate of 20%. I'm after some clarification. Will I be…

Letting vs Selling early
Hello I have a 1 bed flat thinking about selling up early and moving back in with my mum (low rent) My reasoning is to save so I can find a house closer to family and own a property freehold instead of leasehold with a garden. Currently I cant save enough to achieve this goal whist staying in this flat. If I do sell, I…

Shares
I bought shares in a company called Tadpole Technology back in the 90’s the company went through bad times and I forgot about them, well my Mum informed me she found the certificates and shredded them all yesterday! Why she didn’t ask me before I don’t know! But first how do I go about finding out if these shares still…

Premium bonds for long term returns are absolutely terrible in respect to a stock index fund.
So if you have £50,000 in premium bonds and left it there for 20 years, the probability of all your collective wins over that period of time amounting to at least £180,000 (£180,000 wins + initial £50,000 initial deposit = £230,000 total) is 60% - 70%. But if you invested that £50,000 into a passive index fund like MSCI…

How to Calculate Crypto Profit / Loss
Hopefully this is the right forum for my question.I'm trying to establish how to calculate profit and loss on crypto, but it could equally apply to shares. For example, if 10,000 tokens are purchased at varying prices, and then sold, should I calculate the profit or loss based on the total purchase cost regardless of…

Savings starter rate
If you are under State pension age and all your income was from ISAs, presumably you also have the starter rate available, along with personal allowance? So theoretically you could take any amount from an ISA and still have £18750 in other savings interest before tax was due? i.e. £250k + in non tax wrappered savings? That…

Mathematician wanted
Mr Bags has £1,000,000 in savings earning 3% net interest every year. At the end of every year he withdraws £60,000 in total to purchase the following years supply of chocolate. He obviously needs to draw down from his capital every year but how long until he has nothing left? (cash that is, not chocolate) Thanks in…

80% equity at 55 - bad idea?
The question is as the title says. For context, I have a small DB pension coming at age 60, I'm saving into a SIPP to make up my income until state pension age and that is well on track for where I want to be. I also save cash every month and have plenty of cash savings. I'm fortunate enough to have a bit of money…

Ifa, dfm and financial planners (fp) all in it together!
Writing on behalf of family member who has experienced the above companies. Was a customer for approx 8 years paying top dollar to an ifa by way of dfm and fp for ultimately a service we could have done elsewhere cheaper and better performance (in hindsight). Had a sipp that was invested with Zurich which was then…
