New hamster
Hey! I just need some advice about my new Syrian hamster. I bought him on Monday (I know, not long ago!) but he appears to be terrified of me! If he's awake and I'm around he just stands, stares and appears to be vibrating when he looks at me. Me and my partner have tried to make him feel comfortable offering him treats…

Just a grumpy dog ?
My crossbreed terrier has always barked when people come to the door or something comes through the letterbox , increasingly he's finding other things to bark at like whistling on adverts , the early morning birds twittering and at 1-45 am today a cat outside ! These are all things he's never had issues with before. Is he…

Costly pet insurance (cats)?
Hi everyone, I am looking, seriously, at how much I am currently paying in pet insurance for my two cats. My almost 9 year old Birman has 'covered for life' with PP - I have claimed once on it for dental work and some tests required, came to around £400. Otherwise, she is pretty healthy, has had 2 x bouts of cystitis but…

Multiple claims for one condition
We have had a couple of vet bills over the past couple of days for our cat and our vet informed us that they can be submitted as one claim, presumably only incurring one excess. The first one was an out of hours emergency vet and the second was our regular vet - we have two invoices and claim forms because the vet needs to…

Do cats become friendlier?
We have had Arthur 12 weeks now and he's still as standoffish as ever He's 6 months old now and he will still scrab me out of the blue. Last night for example he was perched on the back of the sofa behind my head which is his preferred spot, when out comes the paw and claws and he's attached to my ear drawing blood Earlier…

Dog Aggression Problem
Little bit of an odd one. My parents have two dogs, total opposites. One is an extremely placid terrier - just wants to sit on you lap and sleep. Does nothing terrier like. Doesn't chase anything, doesn't dig, plods around. Almost acts like an old dog, despite being under 5. The other is about a year younger and the exact…

Has anyone used ear powder to cleanse and stop scratching?
My dog doesn't like his ears being examined, or liquid being squirted down them, so much so, the vets can't examine him or apply the treatment. I sometimes try it when he's scratching them, but he's always ready and jerks away then flaps his head violently. Offering him food makes it worse since he guesses what is to come.…

Will an Inflatable Buster Collar Stop a Dog Scratching & Licking - thoughts /advice?
Hi all :) Very long time no post, hope everyone is doing OK. My dog is having a really bad spell with licking and scratching her front "armpits", and seems to be stuck in an itch scratch cycle, so probably making it worse herself. I'm considering buying one of these to make her wear in the house for a while, to see if it…

Cattery won't allow cancellation
Hi all, My mother who is in her 80's booked her cat into a cattery on the 31st of August, she has tried to cancel today (the holiday starts on the 11th of August). They have told her she cannot cancel and will still have to pay the full price. I have had a look on their web site and there is no information on cancellations…

Suggestions on where to bulk-buy catfood/litter?
Hi everyone - we have 12 cats (added 3 this week) and I'm figuring out what we need monthly in terms of supplies. Currently we're looking at (for a typical 31 day month): 186 x 390 or 400g tins of Whiskas chunks in jelly (could consider Felix as an alternative) 9 x 3kg bags Purina One Sensitive 124 x pouches of Felix…

getting rid of mice when you have pets?
anyone had to get rid of mice while they had other pets? I've tried all the usual non poison things and they still keep coming back and so it is looking like we might have to put bait down :( or we're going to have a major problem Now I can put it where I know our puppy can't get at it directly but worried that he may pick…

Cat with heart murmur??
Hi all - new to the forum and just putting a question out there.. has anyone had a cat diagnosed with a heart murmur? We've been told our much loved boy has a "severe" murmur, as part of his annual vaccinations and health check up, and the vet is concerned enough to send him for an ECG (waiting on the referral atm).. I…

Devastated
Woke up this morning to find my sweet 16 year old cat dead. She was on the windowsill in the living room. It was one of her favourite places to sit as she could keep an eye on the garden from there. I'm devastated - it was totally unexpected. She had been in good health and playing with her sister in the garden yesterday.…

Awkward

stray kittens?
My Son has found what could be stray kittens and Mother. They are living in a run down shed, windows are broken which is how they get in and out. I went to have a look and knocked on the house door, the owner didn't know anything about them, they said they would inform the landlord but not sure if they will or even if the…

Considering buying a Shih Tzu pup - advice please
I am considering buying a shih Tzu pup next year and would like any thoughts or advice on this. Obviously it is not something to enter into lightly so using the next minimum 8 months to think this through thoroughly. We are a family of 4 with 2 kids (current ages 2 and 6, but would be a year older by the time we got a…

Alternatives to Hill's d/d feline diet
Hi everyone! My lovely little lady, Purdey, has inflammatory bowel disease and I was wondering if anyone else is in the same boat as me with their cat. Let me explain: Purdey has been on Hill's D/D (both wet and dry) cat food since she was diagnosed. This is because it is a single source protein (venison & pea) which does…

Anxious cat marking indoors
Hi everyone. I often read, but don't post, so I know there are some fantastic posters on here. I'm hoping you can help. We brought cat 2 home two years ago, at 12 weeks. We introduced her slowly to Cat 1, not best of friends, but zero problems. We then added to our family with Cat 3, one year ago. Again, introduced very…

Our lovely almost 10 year old cat Gizmo has been diagnosed with cancer, its attached to trachea and surrounding areas, the vets think it started in the throat or tonsils. Anyone have any advice based on their own cat experiences, we have a very tough decision to make, cat is in pain. Awaiting call from Langford…
