Has anyone used ear powder to cleanse and stop scratching?

My dog doesn't like his ears being examined, or liquid being squirted down them, so much so, the vets can't examine him or apply the treatment. I sometimes try it when he's scratching them, but he's always ready and jerks away then flaps his head violently. Offering him food makes it worse since he guesses what is to come. Paradoxically he likes his ears being tickled and being petted generally, but he knows the difference.

Has anyone found a less strenuous way to cleanse a dog's ears? Someone mentioned an iodine based powder and I have found this. It's unclear how to apply it, but as far as I can tell the powder is applies to the inside of the ear flap, not the ear canal. Since that is were mites and wax gathers which I think causes the itching, I'm not sure if it's mch use. Has anyone tried similar stuff? I guess my dog would be less stressed by a powder on the flap of the ear.

Yep give that Thornit powder a try. You are right, you just rub it on the inside of the ear flaps and don't put any in the ear canal.

Thorn it is fab and yes it just goes on the inside of the ear so you don't have to get it right down the ear.

So does the powder find its way down the canal from the flap? I think it's the canal and not the flap that needs cleaning. Otherwise I could just use a wipe .

I use Thornit for my two floppy eared dogs - great stuff! Just put a small amount on the handle of a teaspoon and put into outer ear - rub ear a bit and done!

No you only use it sparingly, rub it gently into the ears and your dog will probably shake its head to get rid of any loose powder as soon as your done. It kills off the ear mites and that consequently clears up the wax that makes the ears dirty.

If your dog doesn't really like you touching the inside of his ears, I'd just try the powder first and only give them a clean with a wipe after you've tried the powder for a week.

My point is that mites and wax lie inside the ear on the lining of the canal, not on the flap, so I'm not sure how it can be of any use!

Ear mites are tiny mites that live on the surface of ear canal skin of cats (or dogs). They are barely visible to the human eye. An infestation produces brownish ear wax, similar in appearance to coffee grounds

Put some thornit on the tip of a teaspoon handle and tip in. The dog will shake his head and scratch to try and get rid of it which works it in

Of you can use a cotton bud to clean that gunk out without going into the ear canal do so. You do know dogs ear canals are quite far back? I alwaysed massaged that bit to help the powder down

Yea that's the same method I used, as recommended by the vet .I also used unscented baby wipes to clean the gunk out after 😁

You put the powder on the area you have shown in the photograph but not down into the actual ear canal.

Drop some powder in it fold the ear flap over and massage.
