What to do about this sycamore tree?
There is a sycamore tree (so I'm told) growing on the very edge of our neighbours driveway, less than a metre from a wall of our house. I'd never thought about it before, but recently a visiting friend said when leaving 'ooh, I'd ask your neighbours to get rid of that sycamore if I were you', and since then it's concerned…

Growing horseradish in a pot
I'm keen on making fire cider so have been looking for horseradish. I finally found some organic roots in a veg shop. I think I can plant some in a bigish pot with decent compost but since I failed miserably to grow on ginger root I'd be grateful for any tips

Is this wild garlic?
The woods where we walk our dogs has lots of this plant, gives off a garlic scent, and when you tear a leaf it smells of garlic, so I’m thinking it’s wild garlic, but being cautious I thought I would ask here if it is. If it is, can you eat the flowers as well as the leaves? Thanks

Awful weather - typical Brits talk
Well it's been downright awful here in Somerset for the last couple of days with non-stop rain! Just wondering how committed you lovely peeps are... have you been put off by gardening when it's raining? Are you a shrinking violet or a hardy perennial? Just a light hearted thread ☔🌧️

GreenFly - A 'flylady style' gardening thread with weekly tasks to tame your garden
What do we mean by GreenFly? Over on old style there is a long running and supportive community who focus on getting the house clean and tidy in smaller steps. A group of us thought that something similar for taming the garden would be very useful so here it is. The idea is that by doing little and often we can get on top…

When to start feeding shrubs and other plants
When do you start to feed your shrubs etc., how often, and with what? I'm reluctant to try blood, fish & bone due to the foxes.

Algae stain on wooden swing seat
Hi I used to use Cuprinol to preserve exterior wood. Is there a preservative I can apply to the swing seat that will kill the algae or do I need to lightly sand the green algal stain off before treating?

overhanging tree branches which are falling in the garden, safety risk to my children
Hello, I'm not sure if my issue is under the right thread. I do apologize. As per land Registry, the land on my left boundary is owned my Network Rail and is under the Reigate&Banstead administration. The trees on that land have dead branches, overhanging my garden, never been trimmed since we moved at our property, and…

Patchy grass advice please
Hi this area was gravelled over when I bought the house 5 years ago. I've been trying to get grass to grow using seed ever since but it doesnt really work and as you can see it is patchy with mainly moss. Any suggestions? Turf?

Grass cuttings as mulch
Just scarified and raked the lawn and have a big pile of cuttings. No other treatment since autumn so wondering if I can use them as mulch.

My lawn is a mess
Hello everyone, I had a new lawn laid a couple of years ago, and it's not been very good. There are a lot of bare patches and mouldy bits, and some weeds are growing on it. I have some autumn moss weed killer and fertiliser. Do you think it would be okay to put it on the lawn now, in March? Do you have any other…

Lidl seeds in - smaller range and higher cost but still value
Went into my local branch and the seeds are in. Whilst the flower section has been fairly consistent over the last decade, since Brexit the vegetable seed options have declined annually. And for the first time prices have "increased". Small packets are still 29p each but now 4 for £1 instead of 5, although the large…

Palm trees in pots
Hi ive 3 palm tress in half beer barrels they are about 6 ft high. The soil within the pots is rock solid. I’ve bought some bags of multi purpose compost to top them up with but I’m just wondering if I need to be addressing the soil that’s already in the pots. Don’t think it’s been touched other than weeded since I planted…

Help with the front lawn
I moved in here two years ago and clearly the lawn had just been cut endlessly in summer and nothing else ever done with it, so it was sparse, yellow and full of moss and weeds I have fed the grass regularly and scarified it half to death in autumn. Moss is gone but the weeds are proliferating and now it's about 50:50…

Preserving stuff - 1. Basil
I'd love to be able to have this flavour to hand during the winter but know that drying a thin leaved plant (I've tried Mint before) is a hit and miss process and I don't have that much Basil to practise with. I was considering some sort of Basil oil but not convinced by the internet ideas. But would it be better to smoosh…

Can a fir or other evergreen be grafted to a willow to give super growth rate?
When I am walking in the forestry I love the feeling going deep under the canopy of those huge fir (I think that is what they are?) trees gently swaying in the wind. Where the light is blocked out and you are walking on soil that feels soft as clouds. To grow a forest like that I guess would take decades and I would be…
