Indy2, Scottish pound, and house prices
If Scottish independence did actually happen, with its own currency, then do you think that the currency would devalue against the GBP? My big concerns in an independent Scotland are: 1. Increased austerity and tax rises to account for the deficit 2. A devaluation of the new Scottish Pound (or whatever) against the GBP I'm…

Tories dump starter homes pledge
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/starter-homes-pledge-200000-housing-minister-policy-tory-manifesto-pledge-gavin-barwell-a7624841.html I particularly love the bit that says starter homes should be available to those earning under £80,000 a year, or £90,000 in London. How much under do you suppose they are…

What happens to my loan if no deal is reached?
I was wondering since there is a possibility, albeit a small one. After Article 50 this week (hopefully) If EU says screw you UK and UK says screw you too EU and no agreement is reached to secure the rights of EU nationals living in the UK and UK nationals living in the EU and I am told that by this date (could be few…

Does anyone talk about house prices in here anymore?
... or is this place now to bore others with pet projects your family can't stomach hearing you bang on about ? On a side note apparently Wood Green might be getting a 3.5 billion investment. https://www.google.co.uk/amp/www.standard.co.uk/news/london/35bn-scheme-for-7500-homes-in-wood-green-a3471106.html%3Famp X

Is there an award for economically illiterate ideas?
Because I have a nomination: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-39139128 Consider a buyer looking at a 200k house and having to find 1500 in stamp duty. Same buyer can not only now afford to pay 201500 for the house but in fact probably more as the stamp duty amount can go to the deposit and because the purchase price of…

is there any point in buying property in rubish areas?
Just want to start a new debate. does it make financial sense to buy a property in a rubbish working class or poor area in london? given prices have risen so fast lot of these areas have outperformed as they started from a relatively very low level. does it now make sense to buy in these areas as an investment? i feel no…

Savings ratio down to pre-2008 crash levels
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/uk-economy-kept-afloat-spending-binge-obr-treasury-watchdog-warning-a7619351.html Any thoughts?? Anecdotally, I know several people who brought forward 'big ticket' purchases before Christmas because of predicted price rises. Those people are now paying off said purchases and…

If the Labour Party didn't exist, would anyone today invent it?
AFAICT all Labour is for now is to provide a pretext for envy, by making out that resenting someone else's harder work and greater success is a respectable moral position, rather than a shameful personality flaw. But to put it another way, what does anyone want done that they need the Labour Party to exist to get done?

Home Ownership at Lowest Level for 30 Years
https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/2997977/home-ownership-plunges-to-the-lowest-level-in-30-years/ The rate of young people renting is higher of course. Almost half of people aged 25-34 now rent. If you're a landlord you face huge political risks IMHO.

Will Scotland become independent in the next 5 years?
Regardless of your views on Scottish independence (everyone on the Scotland thread has entrenched views, and no-one is changing anyone else's mind on this), do you think it will happen in the next 5 years or so?

Letting a house we already own, under the new BTL rules?
We used to own 2 BTL properties but sold them a few years ago. So now, under the new rules, how will it work if we decide to let what is currently our familly home? We don't need to buy it, we already own it, so we won't be stung for the new stamp duty. We are currently just under the tax threshold so currently non tax…

HS2 has ruined my chances of owning a house
I have previously posted about why are housing prices in the north are so much cheaper than the south. My plan was to move up north. I have contacted estate agents who are based in the cities where HS2 will be traveling to and all the estate agents have said housing prices will rise greatly because of HS2. Therefore the…

How do any single buyers manage to afford houses when only able to borrow 4x income??
This is something that severely intrigues and concerns me, how do people actually manage to afford to buy even just 2-bedroom flats/houses, when you can only borrow 4x income for a mortgage? And im not talking minimum wage - sub 20k salary people, nor am I meaning the absurd London property market, instead I mean just…

House prices, emotions and 'pressure'
I've been posting a lot on the forums recently due to the fact we're now in the position of buying our first house together. With years of hard graft and saving we're up to a point where we can finally put our first foot on the ladder (which seems to be getting away from us each month). Forgive me in advance if this seems…

Are car loans driving us towards the next financial crash?
Any views? A lot of people in the comments have said that it's worse to have a loan on a depreciating asset (a car) than an appreciating one (a house). https://www.theguardian.com/money/2017/feb/10/are-car-loans-driving-us-towards-the-next-financial-crash

Here's why I don't think immigration will fall following Brexit
The government want to get immigration down to 100,000 a year I think that target is way off the mark and people who voted Brexit to curb immigration are in for a huge shock. Ending June 16 net migration was 325,000 all in. 189,000 are from the EU 196,000 are from outside the EU (whom we have control over don't forget)…
