Old style as an escape from the world?
Everything seems to be driving me crazy right now - the house is cluttered and disorganised (too much stuff in a small house) so cleaning takes longer than it should and it never looks "done" plus so much in the house needs work that it way out of budget. Plus my job is getting more stressful (more responsibility, minimal…

Carpet & Upholstery Wipes
Hi all, I have always used 1001 wipes but according to the manufacturer they are now discontinued. Can anyone recommend any other carpet and upholstery wipes as I can only find all purpose or floor wipes. Really struggling to find wipes specifically for spot cleaning a carpet. Many thanks.

A month of slow cooking
We are a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids aged 2 and 7). Our kitchen is tiny and we don't have an oven so cooking meals is tricky to say the least!! We do have a halogen and Remoska but they both take up quite a bit of counter space. With all this in mind I want to see if I can use the slow cooker (and only the slow cooker)…

mars bar cornflake cake help needed!
DH has been away for the weekend with his Boys Brigade company and has returned with nearly a kg of cornflakes which weren't eaten - 'so you can make cornflake cakes'. I had memories of using mars bars ages ago to do this, so have just bought a 4 pack of mars bars and thought I would just google for the recipe - how hard…

Weekly Flylady Thread 19th March 2018
What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to make the whole task easier and quicker. We also…

Soda Farls In The Oven
It’s a long time since I made soda farls, the last time I made them was in an electric frying pan, but that’s long since retired Anyway checking up on recipes I noticed that a large number of them used the oven. I haven’t actually made them in the oven before. Has anyone cooked them this way and would you notice any…

Veg Steamer recommendations please
I'm finding that cooking with gas seems to be far more expensive than using the electricity (I use the slow cooker a lot), and also as I have fibromyalgia I sometimes find my hands are too weak to be coping with heavy pans. I'm wondering if a veg steamer is a good buy. I figure plastic is much lighter to wash and also if I…

We would all be Millionaires, Rodney!!
 Quick bit of Arithmetic shoes...and these are very ball-park figures...that if we hadn't eaten or drunk anything or lived anywhere or paid any taxes most of us would be Millionaires?? Take £20,000 (very low assessment of average wage for most of us...including the lower rates earlier in the 70's 80's etc). And…

Can you hand wash clothes with shampoo?
DS2 has a 3 week field trip to a marine biology research station. He has a small baggage allowance and his washing stuff must be eco friendly/bio degradable. I've seen ecover do stuff for washing clothes, and faith in nature do body wash and shampoo. To save space I'm wondering if he could just take a shampoo to wash hair,…
