Obsolete vacuum cleaner - can't get spares.
I have an old (about 12 years old) panasonic vacuum cleaner which still works perfectly. The floorhead thing needs replaced as the rubber has come away and it's now really hard to push it around. It's also leaving marks. I've rang panasonic and they no longer stock parts so they gave me a number that has spares for older…

Woolly hat for tea cosie.
I was looking on ebay for a tea cosie, then it suddenly stuck me I could use a old hat, or indeed a fairly new one I never wear. Indeed I have a few I never wear as the are not very good for various reasons. So found a use for them. I will see how well it work next time I make a brew! One I have fits over very well, and it…

Weekly Flylady Thread 20th November 2017
What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to make the whole task easier and quicker. We also…

Let's Get Motivated
It’s time for me to find some motivation and I thought that, maybe, we could all help spur each other on. So I have started this thread in the hope that we can provide support to each other and motivate ourselves to get stuff done. Each day/week, I have good intentions of getting some jobs done and usually I write long…

Every penny counts
I’ve finally bought a house and have seen the stamp duty bill and nearly cried! After spending so long being debt free I’m so reluctant to put it on a credit card so I’m on an every penny counts mission to save money. I’d love to know everything you do even to save a penny. I’m thinking even down to taking tea and coffee…

Mixed peppers
I couldn't resist buying a big bag of mixed peppers in the market. Bit stupid, but it's done now. Any ideas on how to make the best of them. I've already done Mediterranean veg, will be making ratatouille tomorrow, but what else?

Reheating filo topped pie
Hi I made a chicken, bacon and mushroom pie on Thursday. No pastry on the bottom but topped with crumpled up filo sheets that had been brushed with butter. My question is how would you reheat this pie today. I don't want to burn the fragile peaks but equally don't want it to be soggy. I've never used filo pastry before so…

Eco Egg washing alternative
Hi I was wondering if anyone has any experience of using the Eco egg for washing and if works just as well as powder/liquid? I'm looking to save a bit more and also something a little more Eco friendly. I would probably only use it for clothes and stick to bio for towels and bedding. All opinions greatly appreciated!…

Failed rice pudding : )
Hello, I tried to make a rice pudding today - it went wrong  I followed my usual Mrs Beeton's recipe (soak rice, stir, in oven at 150 for 2 1/2 hours etc). The pudding came out still liquid, no 'crust' and the rice still dry and crunchy. The only different was that I used coconut milk instead of dairy milk (I don't…

Homemade dishwasher tablets
I have recently seen a number of recipes for homemade dishwasher tablets, and thought I would try one. I hate the amount of plastic waste in the individually wrapped tabs. Not sure if it will be cheaper or not but I suspect so! Has anyone else tried this with any success? The recipe i have found asks for bicarb of soda,…

DIY Mould Spray
I have a continual battle with mould in our kitchen and bathroom (despite regular airings) and rather than keep buying Mould Sprays, I am going to experiment and make one myself using ordinary bleach (which seems to be an ingredient in so-called specialist mould sprays). I wonder if I need to add anything to it; what…

How do you get your fibre?
I don't seem to incorporate enough fibre into my diet. I sometimes have bran flakes for breakfast but get bored of it every day. What are other people eating to get fibre?
