How do you get your fibre?

Options
I don't seem to incorporate enough fibre into my diet. I sometimes have bran flakes for breakfast but get bored of it every day. What are other people eating to get fibre?

I think we get plenty of fibre. I have cereal for breakfast, topped with a banana.

Lunch today will be a lentil and carrot soup, then I'll have an orange.

Dinner will include spaghetti squash, cauliflower and broccoli (with veggie sausages)

Hubby will also snack on dried fruit and nuts throughout the day and have extra fruit, as he cycles 26 miles a day.

If you're a meat eater, could you bulk out chillis/stews/bolognese with lentils or beans? Also, try switching to brown rice?

:) Vegetables, fruits and nuts. Also, if you cook potatoes and allow them to cool and eat them, they have formed something called resistant starch, which is great fodder for the micro-organisms in your gut.

Human beings are 99% bacteria. You don't need to eat grains or grain products at all, they are difficult for us to digest and the gut isn't intended to be scoured out like a grubby saucepan.

Lots of veggies, that's the key.

  • Wholemeal bread. In fact, wholemeal everything - bread, pasta, brown rice.

Loads of veggies, and OH could eat fruit for England.

  • In the Olden Days, before I discovered the idea of gut microflora, if I felt I needed more fibre, I took a teaspoon of psyllium husks mixed into a glass of orange juice. Now I’d just eat the orange! I do eat lots of fruit & veg, a fair bit of that home-grown, but I also make & eat or drink a variety of ferments, e.g. kimchi, water kefir, kombucha tea & properly-made sourdough bread - not the supermarket variety, which is just made to taste like sourdough - which all help to keep things moving through, as it were. My weight had been gradually creeping up, as seems to happen to ladies of a certain age, but since I’ve been doing this it’s stabilised, albeit at a rather higher point than I’d like. I don’t eat a lot of grains, and those I do will have been well-fermented or at least soaked, and I haven’t felt the need to acquire any extra fibre for some years now!

I don't know about "what's what" when it comes to all that nutrition stuff.... so I'd have to say: baked beans.

They are my default side dish for any cooked breakfast, for lunch on toast, or as a side dish to many "main meals".

I'd not have a clue beyond beans what's got fibre in it.

I buy more baked beans than any other vegetable, buying multipacks which get eaten pretty quickly ... whereas other cans might sit in the cupboard unused for months.

    I LOVE beans.

Bran flakes have the opposite effect on me than the reason people eat them :o - as do other 'fibrous' foods that are grain based.

I tend to eat a lot of veggies, and some fruit. I also make sourdough.

I find soup a good way to get a lot of fibre - veggies with lentils..

  • Lots of fresh fruit and veg plus bran flakes for breakfast I don't eat bread at all but I quite like the occasional rice cake,I love the Kello sweet chilli ones but you can't always find them in the shops.
  • Been a vegetarian since I was 11. I love veg. Having to make a conscious effort to eat more veg is an alien concept to me.

I have bran flakes on the days I can face eating breakfast; usually with banana.
I don't peel anything that doesn't strictly need it - for instance, spuds are carefully scrubbed before use but never, ever peeled, even for mash.
    HM wholemeal bread.

Other than that - dunno, really; I'm vegetarian, so probably getting a decent amount of fibre anyway, but it's not something I consciously put a lot of thought into.

Porridge oats every morning and then plenty of fruit and veg, I'm always over my recommended fibre intake :)
