Meals for the month - rejuvenation needed!
We are a family of 4 (2 adults, 6 yo and 2 yo) and our monthly shopping budget is £260 which covers all food, toiletries - EVERYTHING basically. Up until recently that has been fine though I've noticed recently it's not been stretching as far as it used to and I am considering upping it to £300. (I do think that a lot of…

Can I re-use?
Hello all, My other half has a wee obsession with Red Kola of which we have managed to find a supply of 1 Litre glass bottles. We bought 48 of them! These are the exact ones. Can I re-use them? I'm wondering if they will be OK to preserve my own handmade cordial in them. Thanks for any help

Making the most of smaller freezer space with a baby on the way
Hi everyone, I'm new to posting but have been lurking on and off for a few years, being very impressed by a lot of your thriftiness! I'm currently 6 months pregnant, and looking forward to how to make life as easy as possible when the baby comes, but also being more thrifty/clever with food in general. I really dislike…

Repairing running jacket
Cleaning lady has put my favourite running jacket in the tumble dryer. This appears to have melted the glue around the hem which held in the drawstring? with a flap of material. The jacket is a breathable Goretex like material with the flap a very thin mataterial. Anyone have any repair ideas? Would post pic but…

Blackberries
Today I have foraged my first crop of blackberries for the year. They were growing on a disused railway line that is my route home from work. I usually freeze them and turn them into blackberry and apple crumbles during the year but I wondered if any of you have any other ideas for me. Also, isn't it a bit early for…

How to make tastier mince?
I know this is a really basic question - sorry. Found some lamb mince in the freezer and it's in the slow cooker to make a shepherds pie tonight, BUT I know that it needs a certain something "extra". I put onions, diced carrots, lamb mince, lamb stock (Knorrs stock cube) and bouquet garni in. I'm fine to make a really…

Asda Meatball marinara pizza topping
Hi Everyone, I have a quick question, i have a pack of Asda marinara meatballs that the store put on top of the pizzas. They were in the reduced cabinet and my husband picked the up and put them in the freezer. Has anyone used/had these before? if so would they be ok to make meatballs with, with a sauce or would they just…

What Temperature for the Washing ?
What temperature do you folks do your washing at ? Only ask because I read an article in the Mail the other day which said that germs on your washing aren't killed until the temperature hits 60 degrees C. And I've never done a wash at that temperature *yikes* Don't be disgusted, please, but I've only ever done the wash at…

Grease stain on linen
I have a purple linen shirt and have managed, stupidly, to get a splotch of olive oil on it from cooking. Please could anyone suggest a method of stain removal that won't take the colour out of the shirt? It is not a new shirt as I tend to keep my clothes until they look too shabby for wearing out of the house but it…

Recipe for after base curry is made?
Hello all, I have bought a base sauce and the base sauce will not make curry on its own, it's a base component for a curry that you would add to a spice blend to make a rich curry sauce. It replaces the onion, tomato, garlic, ginger and paprika part of curry recipe. So wondering if anyone has a bhuna, rogan josh or dopiaza…

War time cookery book recommendations
Has anyone got any suggestions for war time cook books. I'm looking to save money, and the ingredients, and the "general" style of the recipes are what I like eating. I've got one published by the imperial war museum which is ok, I'm just looking for more recipes. I'm not interested in "budget" modern cookbooks, I've got…

Does UHT milk taste the same as fresh milk?
Probably a daft question... however I've noticed that uht milk seems to be considerably cheaper than fresh milk. However I'm not keen on milk with a "funny" flavour to it (thanks to my mother forcing me to eat cereal with sour milk on it when I was little). So basically, does uht milk taste like normal milk on cereal!

What to do with tiny plums
I visited a friend this weekend and there were plum trees on her estate so I have come home with a huge bowl full - but they are tiny, not much bigger than cherries. I halved and stoned loads and they are freezing on 3 trays in the freezer, and I could probably do some more when they are ready, but I'm not sure what to do…

Beef Topside or Rump Roast
I've got the opportunity to buy some beef at approx. half price. The options are: 1. Topside reduced from £11.99 a kilo to £6.00 a kilo or 2. Rump roast from £16.99 a kilo to £8.50 a kilo I don't buy joints of beef that often and I'm not sure whether or not 'rump roast' is that much better than topside, and worth paying…

Weekly Flylady Thread 24th July 2017
What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to make the whole task easier and quicker. We also…
