I've moved to a hard water area, and my kettle needs de scaling at least once a month. Currently I've been using white vinegar, which I know is cheap enough, I was just wondering if there are any cheaper ways that 40p a bottle!

You can get metal descalers (I can't remember the correct name for them) - they look a bit like a miniature pan scourer. You put one inside the kettle, and the limescale clings to it rather than to the kettle. Every so often you take them out and squeeze them under running water to clean them, and re-use. You might still need to do the vinegar treatement, but not as often. No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0

Where are you and how much do you use your kettle!
I am in a hard water area and over a year it does not get bad!
And at least the water tastes good!0 -
Try putting a marble in the kettle (I mean the small round kid's toy we used to call 'allys')0

Citric acid from Wilko - 1 tsp in a recently boiled kettle of water for half an hour, then rinse out a couple of times and reboil.
Ignore recommendations to use ridiculous amounts like half a packet, if it still needs another go, just repeat before rinsing. If you're in a hard water area, then you may want to do this weekly/biweekly.
I reckon it probably costs me about 10p a time and doesn't smell.***Mortgage Free Oct 2018 - Debt Free again (after detour) June 2022***

I used to live in a hard water area and had issues with my toilet (swear the last people must have never rescaled it!) I used a whole packet of denture tablets down the toilet, it did help abit so I think it would work well in a smaller space like a kettle and you wouldn't need much. Cheap coke also works if you leave it over night. In the end the best thing for my toilet turned out to be the black domestos bleach but you def can't put that in your kettle lol xxxDEC GC £463.67/£450
