Reducing plastic usage
I am not sure there has been a thread specific to this topic, if there is I hope this post can be linked to it. If not, though, I would like to open a dialogue among OSers who are fed up and concerned by the impact of plastic in the environment. I have worked at reducing plastic in my home and in my life for a long time…

Overdone chutney... Can it be saved?
First I cooked a glut of apples onions vinegar etc in the slow cooker, which turned out too runny. I then transferred it to simmer on the hob, which resulted in treacle toffee texture :rotfl:. It tastes a bit Christmas pudding-esque, and won't spread out of the jar and probably can't be easily tempted out. Can it be saved…

Where have all the sewing patterns gone
Sewing patterns are an horrendous price these days. I want a pattern with long sleeve and possible short for a dress for my 2.5 year old granddaughter. I have scoured the net and cannot find anything I like, plus £7 or so seems extreme. I have even been round the local charity shops and again no luck. Any ideas anyone?

Cheapest pheasants
When I first started posting here, it seemed that most winters someone would ask what do with pheasant: usually Old Stylers who had moved to the country and were surprised by the profusion of these tasty birds. Anyway, the cheapest I have seen this year is at our local farmers' market: £4 for an oven-ready brace. That's £1…

Using whey
Had my first serious attempt at making cheese the other day - it wasn't bad actually. Lots of whey left over and I've read various uses for it and thought I might use it as the liquid in a pizza base. Errrrm....and then rather forgot about it in the fridge for a few days. Cant see anything "growing on it" or the like - so…

Cleaning "shiny metal bits!"
Help! Can anyone help with this problems I seem to have when cleaning around the house. When I clean metal parts of items such as the hinges on the toilet seat, the handles on kitchen doors and kitchen drawer units I use a mixture of vinegar and water but every time it seems to make the surface worse and it changes from a…

making a will
I've decided it's time to update my will. I've had a look around and there is a huge difference in price between making an online will and doing one through a solicitor. Has anyone got any experience of doing an online will? On the face of it they seem very easy, but I don't want to leave any problems for my children to…

Fir Clemt - lucky Wigganers!
I've just seen a piece on our local Granada News about an initiative in Wigan that I think is incredible MSE and really old style. In a building formerly a school, a group collects in food that would otherwise be put in the bin but is still fresh to use, they concoct a menu around what has been given them on the day and…
