Fir Clemt - lucky Wigganers!

I've just seen a piece on our local Granada News about an initiative in Wigan that I think is incredible MSE and really old style. In a building formerly a school, a group collects in food that would otherwise be put in the bin but is still fresh to use, they concoct a menu around what has been given them on the day and produce a cafe menu using those items. Diners give what they want as a donation. What a brilliant idea, don't you think? Apparently, whilst Sainsbury's donates some bread, most of the food comes from wholesalers.

By the way, Fir Clemt? Apparently it means 'really hungry' in Wigan dialect. Well done Wigan!

It sounds like a brilliant enterprise, and where better to run it than Wigan? Good on the local community!

Listening to the news at 6.30 one of the organisers said it was nothing like a foodbank. People paid for their meals, if they thought it was worth it and they could afford to. But as well as trying to reduce waste it was bringing the community together, the example she gave was a couple of little old ladies sitting with, and talking to a couple of homeless men.

  • This has been happening in Northampton at the Lab (the old Labour Club) for about a year now - called Elsie's dinners. They are associated with a nationwide movement that is trying to do this to save so much terrible waste. I have eaten there - they provide a vegan dish everyday as well as at least 3 others. I paid £10 for it because it was well worth it!!!
More of them would be great - if I had the time I would be pleased to help out there.

Wow, this is great news! I wish I lived near enough to patronise the Wigan one (and my apologies for mis-spelling "Wiganer" in the title, I was using my ipad which is far from best for this sort of thing).
