How do I organise a chest freezer in the shed?
I have just been given a small chest freezer on Freegle. We are lucky to have a shed which is insulated, dry, and with electricity so we have space for the freezer. So far, so good. When I Google how to organise it, I see lots of lovely ideas about using ziplock bags, baskets etc. Great. But the shed is at the bottom of…

National trust v English heritage
My DD is buying me a membership of one of these for Christmas. However I'm not sure which would be the best. One is £41 compared to £60 so the cheaper one would be better but I don't want to regret my choice and I don't mind paying the difference. Please has anyone any views on these. I would really appreciate the advise.

pickling
Anybody pickle? I've just pickled 2 large jars of chillies, from my greenhouse, and 2 jars of sliced lemons and limes. My question is when I pickle, can I add to the jars as and when, ie could I do half a jar of chillies now and then add veggies to that same jar in the next 2-4 weeks as they are available or does it all…

Freezing stollen
Hi, I have been given 6 boxes of shop bought stolen and would like to freeze most of them to use at Christmas (otherwise we will just eat them now for the sake of it). However, it says 'not suitable for freezing' on the box. I have in the past frozen other things that say on the packaging that they are not suitable for…

Taste the Goode Life
I've followed Shirley's blog for some time now. In May, she was being assessed for care needs as her health was not too good. After the loss of her husband she was struggling. There has been no news on her blog for some time now - does anybody know how she's doing?

Cleaning old (and threadbare) oriental rugs
I have a huge, ancient oriental rug (about 3.3m wide and 4m long) which I was given by friends to cover the bare floorboards when I moved into this house. I'm not crazy about fitted carpet, and I've actually grown to like this rug, but I'm pretty sure it needs a clean. Some areas are worn and faded, but others I suspect…

We have me DH & DS in our room (main road so we don't level the windows open at night) and the door is closed so the cat doesn't come in DD is in her room with the door…

What it's worth being frugal about?
For example: Juicing my own apples not really worth it. A health satisfaction. I suppose it's a matter of taste in more ways than one. But collecting own firewood really worth it financially. Do you waste time being frugal? Do you have examples where being frugal is a big financial saver? Shopping at Aldi saved me £960 in…

New allotment contract
I am posting this here as I know there are a lot of lottie keepers on board and I wonder whether any of you have had a contract sent to you like the one I have? In it it states the usual like no fires, no sheds etc without permission, ditto poultry and bees but also bizarrely it states we are not to grow rhubarb (!!!) or…

Handing lose change to bank
Haven't seen any recent threads but: - do banks still give free moneybags? - Is it still limited to 5 bags / day? - Do the bags need to add up to £1: eg, 50x 2p coins in one bag or 100 x 1p coins in another?

Do you have enough?
I've just been flicking through some mindless "lifestyle" TV channels, and have come across an episode of Celebrity Fantasy Homes. The subject was being shown around a £4.5 million house in Highgate. Before I knew the price and location, I could see the property was the height of luxury from just a small clip demonstrating…

Out of date chicken
Hi all, quick bit of advice if you dont mind please - I bought some fresh, pre-packed chicken breasts from Tesco a few days ago and they have been in the fridge. Just realised today the best before date is 2nd October. I'm not planning on using them tonight but wondered if they would be ok put straight in the freezer? Or…
