Handing lose change to bank

Haven't seen any recent threads but:

- do banks still give free moneybags?
- Is it still limited to 5 bags / day?
- Do the bags need to add up to £1: eg, 50x 2p coins in one bag or 100 x 1p coins in another?

Natwest gave me some bags last time I asked, but that was a while ago. They've now got a machine that accepts your loose change (similar to the ones you find in supermarkets, but every penny goes into your account), so I just let the kids deposit it & they think it's great.
I've never been aware of a restriction of how many bags you can pay in
Yes you'll need to deposit a full bag only as the bags are weighed to determine the amount inside
    My £2 savings total for 2007 = £92, for 2008 = £124
    My savings from money off coupons for 2007 = £67.97, for 2008 = £194.79
    My £2 savings for 2009 (so far) = £130
My savings from money off coupons for 2009 = £593.08
  • - do banks still give free moneybags? - probably depends on the branch, ask them
    - Is it still limited to 5 bags / day? - as above
    - Do the bags need to add up to £1: eg, 50x 2p coins in one bag or 100 x 1p coins in another? Yes for coppers, it tells you on the bag for each coin but it will need to be the exact amount as they weigh them.

Why not go to a branch that has a cash paying in machine?

I don't know if my local branches have the machines, but I already counted it at home anyway. Thanks for the help. I put them in those clear food bags for now, I'll get the moneybags tomorrow. I also found £10 note in a coat pocket I rarely use so that was great :D

It turns out I have exactly £2.99 in pennies. You couldn't script that :)
  • I regularly pay in odd amounts of coins after PTA events: the machines can weigh how much is in each bag, and the cashier will then make it up to the full amount or put the odd coins into the drawer. e.g. I'll have £11.40 in 20ps; they put the full bag away and would put the £1.40 into the cash drawer.

(On these occasions I pay in perhaps 100 bags of coins. I've never heard of a 5 bag limit!)

I have recently come across banks asking for proof that I am a customer before they change coins into notes for me. I've got around it by being a regular at my PTA bank even though I'm not a personal customer.
They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.

HSBC have machines that count the loose change and pay it into your bank account for you.

Some small local corner shops might accept it when you buy something, just check before paying.
  • I know that Nationwide have a 5 bag limit (it's very annoying!!)
Recently married and loving it x

We save some denominations of coins and OH takes them to the bank (in coin bags) when we're going on holiday, for spending money.

Last year he used the machine, but it kept going wrong because of the large amount he wanted to deposit. So this year he took the cash to the counter.

The assistant warned him that he would need to use the machine next time as they were stopping taking cash deposits over the counter :(
  • Our Santander has a limit of 5 bags per day. Each bag has to have the correct amount of coins to make up the amount stated on the front because they just weigh them to check that theres £1 or whatever inside. They give out free bags but last time said they were running low so i think I was given about 10.

Another poster told me that you can take loose chain to a Metro bank without being a customer where they have a machine.

I use up any loose change in the self service machines in Mr T's. Takes a bit of time, so I choose a time when there aren't too many customers. Handy when I don't have enough to bag up in £1 - £5 -£10 amounts.
