I've just been flicking through some mindless "lifestyle" TV channels, and have come across an episode of Celebrity Fantasy Homes. The subject was being shown around a £4.5 million house in Highgate.
Before I knew the price and location, I could see the property was the height of luxury from just a small clip demonstrating all the gadgetry in one of the bathroom. I personally found it a real turn-off. I have a pleasant, functioning bathroom that is perfectly serviceable, so what use would all these mod cons be to me? If I had the money to invest in home improvements such as this, I'd much rather other people - those living in genuine poverty, or with serious illness - benefited from it rather than spending on fripperies.
Am I alone in this thought?

If I ever won the lottery (not that I do it!) I've always liked the idea of building a row of attractive alms houses, for elderly spinsters... well planned out space with nice sunny gardens for their cats to roam.
I'd rather own/bequeath to a worthy charity a few rows of alms houses with very very affordable rents and live in a sensible-sized house myself than own some over-spacious mansion with ridiculous-price-tagged accessories.0 -
I also like looking at marvellous homes.
But I am glad I live in my little house just the same. It has everything I need, and more.
Can't help looking at other places though. A bit of escapism that's all. Then back to my wonderful reality!0 -
A huge mansion would just be a huge headache.
I agree once I had enough and helped my family and I mediate friends then I would like to "do good" with my millions.....
There are enough people in this world who need help, the homeless, those needing surgery or medical treatments that the NHS have let down, struggling pensioners, ex service personnel.etc.
I'm sure I could put my money to better use than spending it on tasteless bling.0 -
Oh yes, I have enough house, thank you! But altogether too many inhabitants... my cup runneth over! I sometimes think we could do with living in a small castle so there'd be room for everyone and their partners/belongings/stock for work/interests. But I have a feeling that everyone would automatically assume it was somehow my job to keep it all in order, and clean. Sometimes it's brilliant living in a biggish house with lots of family still around us - games evenings, Sunday lunches, important matches on TV, birthdays & Christmas - but sometimes it's a nightmare - nowhere to put stuff, no P&Q.
What I'd really like a bit more of, is garden. I soooo want a small orchard, a proper veg patch & a polytunnel. Part of me thinks, if we can't get the kids to move out (they will keep coming back!) maybe we should move out, to a tiny house in a field somewhere. But definitely no bling or useless gadgets; it'd be all very simple & basic, and calm & peaceful.
But really - I'm very lucky, and I know it - most of the time!Angie - GC Sept 25: £405.15/£500: 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 28/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0 -
I wouldn't ever want to live in a place like that. I would like a slightly larger house just because of my pets but that would suit me fine. I have a small 2 bed and I would be happy with one more room and a slightly bigger garden as mine is postage stamp sized.:p
I would love to live by the sea but it wouldn't have to be anything showy, to have a sea view would be lovely.0 -
I have more than enough for my needs though i wouldnt mind replacing bits and pieces.
I'd hate to live in a big house. A 2 bedroom bungalow would do me.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I'm in complete agreement with OP, how much is enough?
People are encouraged to consume and overspend by the constant stream of adverts, mags, 'celebrity' reality shows and justify it with ' I'm worth it '. It's quite sad really, as their lives must be pretty empty.0 -
Honestly I couldn't be bothered with a big house.
Id just be really happy to own my own home outright with a bedroom for each of my children and maybe a guest room.
A nice sized garden to keep a few animals.
To be honest my family bring me far more joy than any fancy house would. It would be nice to not have to worry about money though!I'm C, Mummy to DS 29/11/2010 and DD 02/11/2013

Totally agree - I have a small bungalow which has everything I need - why have a huge house where you would have to walk miles! Its the same with clothes etc - once you have enough for your needs who needs more.
If I had more money I would use it for transport etc as cannot drive far myself due to health issues and also would love to have a holiday with the whole extended family - I think as we get older we realise that 'stuff' is just superficial.Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day. -- Sally Koch0 -
couldnt agree with you more...we watched a programme called something like how the rich get hitched...i would so much rather give the money to help others than buy the range of stupidness imo that the people were buying and dont get me started of the the daft mare that had her portrai painted costing £75000...and she looked like a bag of spannersonwards and upwards0
