Boiling root vegetables - hot water or cold?
My mum taught me that when boiling root vegetables you start with cold water, immerse the vegetables in it, and then bring the water to the boil. I tested the idea this evening by heating hot water from the tap for making mashed potatoes, and when it came to the boil, dropped the potatoes in. I can't say I noticed much of…

Oven trays
Any ideas for good, easy clean oven trays? I HATE my oven trays - no matter what products I use, how long I soak them they still take so much scrubbing to get clean.

Out of date cat food
I wasn't sure whether to post here or on the Pets & Pet Care board. I lost my last cat over 3 years ago and have just discovered 36 large tins of good quality (Felix, Whiskas etc) cat food. I've looked at the date on the top pack of 6 and it says Dec 2013. If it were tinned soup, tomatoes etc, I'd still use it without a…

"Kitchen" table in the living room?
Our kitchen is small and when I added a stand alone cupboard our table went into the garage. We have always tended to eat 90% of our meals in the living room, please don't judge - not always in front of the tv, most of the time it's off anyway - as we're more comfortable and the living room has more natural light. I'm…

How much to cover living expenses?
I'm not sure if this is the right board to post this but I read the threads here and everyone is so friendly and helpful that I thought I'd tap into your collective wisdom. If there's a better place to post it perhaps you could tell me? We have been living outside of the UK for some time and it we are looking at moving…

Sultanas - gone off?
I've just made a lovely dorset apple cake for my hubby. While it was in the oven I went to put the sultanas away and realised they looked almost like they had sugar on them (they didn't). Does this mean they have gone off? I don't use sultanas that often, and thinking back they are probably what I used last November for…

Storing homemade apple puree -help please!
Hi hoping someone can help. I'm trying to use /preserve fruit from the garden. I've made lots of jam and am wondering about putting apple puree into sterilised jars to store as I'm running out of room in my freezer. All the recipes I've found online say you have to put the filled jars into a canning bath or large pot of…
