Fizzing French Beans!!!
Popping over from the Prepping thread where we have, in the past, discussed salting vegetables as a way of preserving them instead of freezing (in the event of a power outage, freezer will be useless). I have started a very large Kilner jar of salted beans and am adding daily to the jar as and when I pick. However, I have…

Sweets made Simple BBC2
Did anyone see this? It's a new series by Hope and Greenwood showing how to make sweets. I've liked Hope and Greenwood for a few years, so was pleased to see they've got a tv show. It's on Friday nights BBC2 at 8.30pm.

I want to make some ketchup/sauce but unsure about bottling safety?
Good Morning all. I want to make some ketchup or sauce base with a load of tomatoes I have but I keep reading about safety when bottling and all sorts of bacteria that can lurk. Now i'm a long term jam maker but apparently thats different because of the sugar preserving it. Anyhoo, what I had in mind was to roast some…

Which Mop?
Hello I need some advice regarding mops :D Over the last year I have been using a sponge mop with replaceable heads and they hardly last any time at all before falling to pieces so it is becoming expensive to replace them. What I need is a mop that doesn't require a bucket, is capable of tackling a very mucky floor…

No spend month
I've been reading about 'no spend months' which is sort of like the fiscal fast but its for an entire month. It refers to general spending not bills and you set yourself a budget for that month that covers groceries and petrol/travel expenses so you can actually pop to the shops if you need to as long as you keep in that…

The Great British Bake-Off is back!
Who else is watching? The Swiss roll technical challenge was very interesting,as it sounds deceptively easy to make.I've never made one myself.I'm always amazed at some of the flavour combinations they come up with. I thought the contestant who had her first two cakes too dry would be eliminated. The lady with the Jaffa…

Those sewing grids at school?
Can anyone help me with where to buy those square grid things that we used to use at school to learn to sew? They were fabric, open-weave squares or rectangles I think, with lots of holes in the grid to practice stitching. Do these still exist? Thanks in advance :)

Removing smell from fridge/freezer
Last week whilst we were away, the storm tripped the electricity supply to the fridge/freezer.... Five days later the stench which greeted us was appalling. Thoroughly cleaned etc now - but the smell remains. Have left bicarbonate of soda in bowls and changed these but despairing of regaining a smell-free appliance.…

Blackberry Icecream Yum! But Need Pureeing is a Pain. Ideas?
OK, I recently made some super delicious blackberry ice cream after picking some early blackberries when out for a walk (on public footpaths). But it took me an hour or more to sieve the fruit to make a puree - which was a bit OTT. Is there an easier way to extract puree from blackberries? Obviously way too many stones to…

Hi there, Wondering if anyone could help me, recently moved into an old house that has the overwhelming stench of dog urine coming from the kitchen. Dyeing loose covers
For ages I have needed a new suite in my living room, and I have finally got some money to start having a look around. I want a loose cover fabric sofa and the best value one which I like (I don't want anything flash or showy) is the Ikea Ektorp. It is a sturdy sofa and at the moment a three seat sofa including white loose…

where do people get the money?
This has been on my mind for a while. I earn a not too bad wage, and my wife has a small income. After all bills, food shopping, petrol etc. We have about £750 per month spending on anything we want. To me, that seems like a lot of money, but the money just dissapears. Now, I see so many other people eating out a lot and…
