Which Mop?

Options
Hello

I need some advice regarding mops :D Over the last year I have been using a sponge mop with replaceable heads and they hardly last any time at all before falling to pieces so it is becoming expensive to replace them.

What I need is a mop that doesn't require a bucket, is capable of tackling a very mucky floor (children and animals) and is long lasting.

Thank you!

People on the continent use a floor cloth on a broom. Much more hygienic than mop and easy to use. The cloth is dipped in a bowl of detergent, wrung out by hand and wound around the broom to use.
I haven't tried it yet, but am about to......

I like the microfibre mops that can often be found at places like Home Bargains for a few pounds. Microfibre seems much more efficient at picking up the dirt. With two big dogs running in and out I find them better than sponges etc.

I like the flash mop, I bought it in savers before they closed here. I now replace the spray & pads from ASDA. The initial outlay for the pads & spray can be expensive but it lasts ages and is easy & convient.

Edit: if your floor gets really dirty might end up costing a bit in pads. We re- use the pads a few times but after a vaccume the floor isn't too bad, just the odd spill & general dirt. We take our shoes off in the flat.

I have a Vileda flat mop thing that's basically a very think microfibre cloth. It's great because you can chuck it in the washing machine (or hand wash if you're like me and don't have a washing machine) and it gets it clean. We've had ours about 2 years and it still looks like new. I just squirt some floor cleaner down and wizz round with it and everything is shiny and clean. We got ours in Sainsbury but Tesco also sell them.

  • I`m wondering why the OP stipulates a `no bucket` mop..?
I prefer the old-fashioned stringy mop-heads that unscrew and go in the WM, but I have found it difficult wringing out mop in traditional mop buckets.
I got a plastic mop bucket in Lidl that has a squeezy bit that closes around the top bit of the mop when you push down, so all you have to do is press down on it, no twisting the mop to get all the water out. Makes life a lot easier .

While mine isn't exactly like this, it's very close and works a little better in my opinion. Mine is blue and although it looks cheap, it's pretty robust; the magic is in the mop handle rather than a foot operated pedal. You put the mop in the strainer, then pump down to spin it around. It gets rid of the water in the bucket. Mop heads are machine washable.

I realise this isn't your "no bucket" policy but it might show you there are advances in the good old mop and bucket.
  • Mine is a Vileda `super mocio`. I just looked and it still has the label on!
