Stardrops turned to jelly & Zoflora caps breaking... is it me or is it them?!
I just dug out my 'reserve bottle' of ordinary orange concentrate Stardrops from the back of the cupboard and found it has turned to jelly! It's really thick and barely moves when i turn the bottle over. I can't see any cracks and the lid was on right. I guess it's been there a year or so as I stocked up when it was on…

Help Adapting Recipes for Slow Cooker
Hi everyone! I'm considering getting a slow cooker because, although I love to cook and am usually happy to spend ages preparing, I'm currently in a situation that's leaving me tired and unable to do heavy lifting. We're also trying to keep our grocery bill low, so I'm interested to explore using cheaper cuts of meat,…

I have just seen some dishwasher powerd on ebay that is in a 10kg tub and is made from crushed tablets (manufacturers rejects) Does anyone know how many washes I could expect to get in a slimline dishwasher from a tub that size, and has anyone used this…

Keeping Recipes in the same place
I'm compiling recipes that I think my girls might eat all in one place rather than have loads of cookbooks. I have copied some recipes and put them into a Word document, but there are other recipes that I have cut out from magazines and I want to scan them and put them into the same document. But I'm not sure how to do it.…

Need advice re: chilli con carne
I attempted to make chilli last night in the SC. It is a new gadget for me so I am trying things out. I made it like I would do on the hob but didn't add as much water. I added the kidney beans an hour before it was do to be eaten and they were still hard and I still had too much liquid in it. My ingredients were: Minced…

Cleaning mud from suede gloves
My DH has a pair of suede gloves that got covered in mud when he had to pick up our daughter from a mud puddle in the woods (it was rather entertaining watching her fall in in the first place :rotfl:) Does anyone have any ideas on how to clean them? The mud has now dried but is resisting being brushed off. I know they cant…

Do you wash beef / pork joints before cooking?
I was just about to wash a beef joint ready for cooking later and it has just occurred to me that I may not need to do this? I have googled it and can't find the answer anywhere. I know you don't need to wash poultry as the heat kill the germs but what about beef and pork (especially slow roasting cuts)? I look forward to…

Bargain extra thick cream
I want to make a baked cheesecake (a recipe I've used many times before) but the recipe calls for 100ml of double cream and I only have extra thick (reduced price of course). Do I need to thin it down with either milk or single cream (also bought reduced price!)?

Recipe too sweet - add vinegar?
Hi all, I tried a new recipe today which is currently in the slow cooker. But it tastes a bit sweet (it's a curry). Will a splash of vinegar help to balance it out? In the cupboard I've got rice vinegar or normal white vinegar - will one of these do the trick?

Cooking and then freezing a sausage casserole
Hiya! I plan on making a large sausage casserole next weekend and then freezing it in portions. I haven't really batch cooked before, so I have just a couple of questions. Do I need to let it defrost before I microwave it or can it be microwaved from frozen? How long will it keep for in the freezer? What veg goes well in a…

Cream / frosting like a bakery, no butter?
I love the cakes from my local bakery, but the filling of a birthday cake or frosting on top of a cupcake is not buttercream. I can only describe it as being a fake type of cream. I really dislike the buttery taste of butter cream, does anyone have an alternative recipe please? TIA

Can you keep fresh sausages from a butcher longer than the supermarket ones?
Basically bought some lovely sausages from a local butchers/farm shop. The butcher told me they were fresh that morning and it from fresh locally slaughtered free range pigs. I bought them on the 23rd Dec but on boxing day hadn't eaten them as planned. On the 28th I opened them and smelled and they seemed fine-hadn't got…

Well, another good week, actually we've had so many Christmas leftovers and it's been fun trying new ways of using them up :) The food I bought for 1 day did 5 days of evening meals  Today we are eating at DH Parents, so another meal pushed, I think I am nearly a week up on food this month! My plan for this week:…

Baileys Double Cream
Happy New Year everybody! I read everyday but post very rarely. Resolution is to change this as I have learned so much in the three years since I found you all. Anyway, apart from the obvious ( on leftover mince pies) is there anything I can make with the cream? Am a bit stuck for inspiration. Many thanks :D TT
