Christmas Gifts in Tiny Jam Jars
My dad just gave me a bag of tiny jam jars (empty) - the kind you get in hotels. I want to make something to go in them as part of people's christmas gift hampers but if I make jam it'll be a more generous portion than that! Any other ideas for them?

The all about NUTs thread
Nuts are so expensive, so I'm starting a thread on how to get the best out of them. I use all sorts of nuts regularly, but buy them in bulk so am looking at ways of extending the shelf life of my supply. I know that freezing is an option, but I'd like to hear whether this affects the quality of the nut? And how long can…

Really tight shopping budget for October!
Hi, I'm a bit of a lurker I'm afraid. So  We have basically just moved house and been told our housing benefit is being cut to less than half! My husband works :( I'm currently in my final weeks of pregnancy though so things 'should' improve when the baby comes. I know, I know I shouldn't look at it like that but…

Please help we are cooking king no kitchen
Title should read: Please help we are cooking with no kitchen. At long last I'm renovating our kitchen :T, at present all the cupboards have been ripped out, the waters been disconnected as well as the gas, so we now have nowhere to cook. Using our initiative, we have set up camp in the living room. We have the fridge…

Hanging curtains over doors
I'm looking for some advice as to how to hang some curtains over a couple of doors. They're a charity shop bargain and will do a lot to stop drafts. Trouble is, they're pencil pleat/tape top so I'm interested in the best way of hanging them. Do I just fix a rail above both doors, or is a track better? I've seen door rods,…

best dishwasher tablets?
I've tried a few brands, but I go back to quantum every time as nothing else seems to remove tea stains. I got the reqular finish last time as they were on offer, but my mugs are getting stained:( Do I have to keep shelling out for quantum? I use extra salt & rinse aid too, but cheap brands.

Your appliance failing stories
About 40 mins ago, I decided to make some broccoli and cheese soup as my broccoli was going yellow. Brought the onion and broccoli to the boil, then switched the heat off. Waited 10 mins to cool down before putting it into my plastic jug blender. I switched it on and within 15 secs, I heard this metal clunk and afterwards…

Preparing baking tins
I was surprised to see a bread recipe yesterday which stated "grease and flour a loaf tin". I have never ever floured a tin or tray when baking bread and loaves just tip out with no trouble. It set me thinking though; I've never actually known the rule for greasing / greasing and flouring / just bunging a mixture into a…

Recipe ideas for a lunch club.
We have started a foodbank in our town which is getting used more and more each week. As the volunteers have been listening to the stories they have suggested that we start up a lunch club so people can come and get a hot meal, starting most likely in the school holidays when kids don't have access to free school meals and…

unsalted butter for cooking/baking
Now I've got an oven again for the first time in years I'm very tempted to start baking a few cakes and nice things. Haven't baked for about 10 years. Now, all recipes seem to state unsalted butter. But I'm sure that in the past I grabbed any old butter out of the fridge, which would have been salted. Even for buttercream…
